She goes back in one week. Do the spacers come off before the actual braces go on? Also, I know that there is alot of pressure and pain, any suggestions about what to do for the pain for her?
Thanks

spacers are just little tiny rubber bands that they stick in between her teeth to "space them out" its like having a thick peice of floss stuck in your teeth. spacer accually hurt more than braces especially since its like the first thing they do, and shes not used to any pain in her mouth. give her ibuprophen and stuff which should help, but im sorry to say that spacers really really hurt, and ibuprophen didnt really do much for me. its only the first few days... anyways, yes, if the spacers dont just fall out on their own from her eating or from the teeth spacing out enough, they just pull them out then put a big metal band around the back teeth and little brakets on all the others followed by a wire and some colored rubber bands of her choice! the colors were always my favorite part. dont worry, shell get through it. it just takes a while to get used to the pain. but seriosuly after a while, the pain accually starts to feel good, cause you know its really working!!!

My son just got braces two weeks ago. The spacers go in ahead of the braces - I believe they help by starting to give a little a separation betwixt the teeth. They will stay in for as long as the braces do. For the first week or so, her mouth may be tender, and soft foods, like milk shakes, apple sauce, soup, etc. may be all that she wants to eat. Before she gets the braces on - the day of the procedure - start her with some Ibuprofen, and then keep up with giving her this as the dosage dictates on the container. You might want to switch back and forth with Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen for a few days until the tenderness subsides. My son is eating hull-less popcorn and pretty much anything he wants to right now - it just took a few days for him to get accustomed to it. Once the teeth move after the initial installation of the braces, things get better. You may find that she needs the Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen on the days that they adjust or tighten the braces as well.

Good luck

My daughter had her spacers taken out before her braces were put on. I would recommend Advil before the visit or right after the appointment for the discomfort. That seems to ease the pain some. Good-luck!

i had to wear braces myself for about 18months; it was a bit sore when first put on ( i think) it was a bit painful for a few days after but that soon fades. When first put on like the same night i strongly recommend having foods that are liquid in variety as its nasty trying to chew... to be honest there is not much you can do about the pain of the pressure; expect what i said giving soft/liquid foods try porridge yum yum... (that delays any unnecessary pain) grin and bear it for about 2 or three days also practice speaking! The best piece of advice you can give to her is that even though they look unsightly at the moment when they come off she'll have absolutely fantastic teeth.....

best wishes & good luck

yes the spacer will be removed and the bands placed on those teeth and braces on the rest. Motrin is what is usually suggested for discomfort --check with the doctor

Soft food, over the counter pain killers and be REALLY patient with her.

Braces are not only painful, but they tend to be put on adolescents who find them totally embarrassing. Talk to her about being careful to follow the doctor's instructions so that she can get them off as quickly as possible. If she doesn't, they will stay on longer.

Two words: Large milkshakes. As for the spacers, I don't know. Is there an orthodontist in the house?

Have her take two tylenol a half hour to hour before she goes in. (Tell the dentist that she did this) When I had my braces, it always helped me cope with when the novacaine wore off.
