It's mainly an American, and slightly old-fashioned, term. I think it originates from back when US soldiers returned from WW II in Italy, and brought back the concept of pizza on a wider scale than what had been known before, when pizza in USA was mainly limited to the Italian community.
Chicago especially is considered the home of the pizza pie, and you will find pizzas in Chicago that are like no other - very deep (up to 2") and with a base very similar to a quiche. Layered with tons of cheese and tomato (and typically the cheese being on the bottom and tomato on top), they are certainly more reminiscent of a pie than what most Europeans would consider a pizza. Still, very nice, and certainly worth sampling if you're even in Chicago.

Well, a slice of pizza is just pizza, but the whole thing is a pie. :)
When you order here in NY, they ask if you want a slice, or the whole pie... A calzone is NOT a pizza pie.

Pizza pie is US Style with a crust that has a lip on it that comes up like a quiche, only it is pizza dough. Pizza is flat, no lip, and calzone is pizza folded in half with the edges sealed so it looks like a pasty.

Well if you believe Dean Martin
"When the moon hits your eye like a big-a pizza pie, that's amore"
So, a pizza pie is love basically. What hoo-ey! We all know love is a bit more than that. It's a pizza pie AND a beer. Doh!

I was told that the word "pizza" actually meant a kind of pie, so it is like saying "pie pie." It became popular here after the boys came back from WWII and wanted more of the tasty bits they discovered overseas.
