What would be the best way to welcome them to the neighborhood? I am thinking of taking over some sort of food, but I am not sure what would be best. Any suggestions/past experiences?

How about a little deli tray. They are probably beat form moving in and be appreciative of the thought. It woulnd't be too hard or expensive for you either.

You never know what a new neighbor's diet preferences will be (vegan, kosher, etc,), but everyone likes plants and flowers! Take over a planter with flowers or ivy that they can hang and will be easy to care for. This is a very kind gesture that is appreciated by almost anyone! I have to admit that I once threw out some food a neighbor I didn't know brought me! I am highly suspicious of strangers and have had some strange experiences before! You just never know!

I agree with the person above me in adding a list of some fun places to go in town...give a basket and maybe include a list of events coming up or a city map, like a fair or tickets to a production coming to town...be unique and different when playing the welcome wagon...do something or give a gift that will be remembered and talked about...an exotic flower or plant and a basket of 'hickory farms' cheeses/crackers and beef sticks are nice...a couple of gourmet mustards/spreads...or you can go the route i did when my brother moved to town...we had about 6 or 7 guys and a few girls come over and help him unpack and carry all the furniture...provided all the cold drinks and bought a few pizzas afterwards...took about 1/4 the time he anticipated and still talked about it years later! because it was family, we broke out the camcorder too...good times!

Food and plants could be okay, but may not be welcome because of diets, allergies, personal preference. Why don't you make a list of some of the "best" places in town to give them. Include things like the grocery with the freshest foods, the stores with the best bargains, favorite restaurants, etc.

flashers of america!??!? ( thanks God that I am not in their neck of the woods!!!) ok, great answers, cookies food, are ok, but I like the idea of flowers too.I am not a plant fan,I hate to have somethin I have to care for, but having had moved alot in the last few years, an extra pair of hands and cold drinks are ALWAYS welcomed! food is great!!! We are tired from moving and living on cold things, cooking / tired of hearing the kids whine about a little thing called hunger... yeah, Food is good, ( KFC anyone???)

Flashers of America, David G? U r a plum fool! I would say just leave them the hell alone and just speak and that's it If they want to be bothered, they'll come to you. I hate when I move in somewhere and people come over, I feel like they're trying to get in my business. Of course they've never brought a housewarming gift either. I, for one, just hate being bothered.

Anything at all would be thoughtful. Maybe even a nice plant - since they may not like certain foods. Also write your families names down and your phone number and give to them!

When I get new neighbors, I take over a couple dozen cookies. It starts you out on the right foot.

I generally walk over and introduce myself. Based on the vibe from talking with them, I might ask them over for dinner. That sort of thing.

i dont think that you need to give them food but if you just go over and say hi and offer any help you can that should be good. That is what happened to me when i moved and did not expect any thing else.
