Over time pollutants accumulate in the body or soil etc. and the effects become worse if they are not eliminated. It is like if you drink tap water and your house has lead in the pipes joints, your body will accumulate lead which could cause many problems as more and more lead is consumed and stored in the body.

Cumulative pollutants are persistent pollutants which are not quickly neutralized.
