If you have to ask that question, you probably don't need to be thinking about having sex yet.

If you insist on thinking about it, assume he has been with other girls before. It's not realistic to think you are his first. If you are his first, most likely he will tell you anyway.

You have every right to ask about his sexual past, but he may or may not be honest about it even if you do. The guy is trying to have sex with you, for Pete's sake. He's not going to deliberately tell you something that's going to screw up his chances! He'll tell you anything he thinks you need to hear to make it happen. If he's had lot's of partners or has paid for it or had anonymous sex with a drunk girl, he's not likely to tell you.

It's always best to wait until marriage. If you choose not to wait, understand that accepting risk is a part of the deal. Asking him about his sexual past is not at all reducing that risks associated with having sex, which I believe is what you are looking to accomplish.

In this day and age you have to ask. It's the only way to find out his history and to ensure your safety.
