I get migraines too- have you been to a neurologist or just your family doc?
You may benefit from Topamax, it's a preventive medication that decreases the frequency & intensity of migraines... sometimes in some people makes them go away all together. I take it & it made them a lot less intense, but I still get them. I use to miss work once a month.
If your headache is that bad, go to the ER- seriously- I do once or twice a year... and don't wait for it to last more than 12 hours to get there or it will last for 3 days or longer.

As for the meds that you are taking, you dont say what those are- some people take Fiorinol or Fioricet- old fashioned migraine meds, others take Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax- (Triptans- the new class of drugs that really get to the root of the problem)... if one doesn't work, another might, so your neruologist might give you samples of several to try over time.
You may need an MRI of your head as well- usually they're normal.

make a list of every day you get a headache, rate it 0 -10 - 10 being the worst pain, how long it lasted, any other factors that may cause it (hormones, stormy weather, food you ate, etc)
that will help the doctor figure them out better as well

good luck

I'm sorry to hear that you suffer with migrains so bad. I was also going through about the same thing. I had a migrain for 9 days. I couldnt do anything. My doctor put me on a preventative madication called Elevil. I started out with 1 pill at nighttime for 3 nights...then I took 2 pills for 3 nights and continued up to 5 pills a night. I have been taking these for a couple months and havent had a single migrain. The only downside is they make it hard to wake up in the morning. I am very tired and it takes awhile to start functioning. But its a small price to pay to keep from hurting all the time. After awhile you can lower the dosage and it will still work. Good Luck and I hope you get some relief soon.

I am sorry that you are having so many problems with migraines. I have had migraines for over twenty years and have had very little luck with the migraine meds out there. I would suggest keeping a journal that tracks your food, stress level, hormonal level (periods can cause migraines in some women), back, neck or jaw pain. I have had to do a few things such as I have a night-guard appliance that I wear at night which takes pressure off my jaw from clenching, go for massages regularly, avoid artificial sweeteners and too many sweets and taking time to relax by doing pilates and/or meditation. Once you are able to narrow down some triggers it may help in your treatment plan. I find that if I take an Advil and a Tylenol extra strength at the first sign of tension in my neck I have been able to avoid getting a migraine. I would keep looking for a doctor who is willing to try to help you.

Good luck.

I am afflicted with these, but not to the severity that you appear to be. My husband has threatened to take me to the hospital before when they bring me to tears. If yours are lasting this long, Excedrin will not help you. You need to see a Dr. who will give you prescription strength medication. Make sure there is an Urgent Care or Emergency Room close by that your insurance will cover. The problem with these migraines is that they will push up your blood pressure to dangerous levels and you are at risk of a more serious predicament, such as stroke. Make sure to get immediate help when these occur. I'm sorry for the pain you've been going through, and I hope you find your relief.

A migraine is a type of primary headache that some people get repeatedly over time. Migraines are different from other headaches because they occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. In most people, a throbbing pain is felt only on one side of the head.

Below is more information on migraines. You really need to talk to your doctor because there are new medicines available to relieve the symptoms. Also your migraines sound more intense then a normal migraine. If the doctor you are seeing cannot assist you, please see another doctor as soon as possible.

Few things reliably help. Your best defense is to avoid the things that make the migraine come on.
Make sure you drink 8 full glasses of water everyday and more when you exert yourself. Make sure you take a multivitamin everyday.
Wear sunglasses.

My 11 year old get visious headaches, vomit, severe pain, noise, light, sound sensitive. Most seem to be stress related. Some have no apparent cause. Brain scans do not indicate any problem there.
He does best if he keep hydrated. Much fewer and less duration.

I would find a neuro doctor. When I have migraines I take the usual migraine meds, plus I take a mild sedative such as ativan or xanax, these help me relax and usually take a nap. I would definitely get to a doctor and make them run some tests. You could something else going on. Good luck

You just have to keep trying medications until you find one that works for you. People are different in the way they react to medications, just as migraine sufferers are different in what triggers the attacks. I have found that 3 ibuprofen tablets work great for me, particularly if I take them before the pain starts, and go lie down in a dark room and try to sleep a little.

BTW, I've never been able to identify a triggger for mine. If you can do that, you can lessen the frequency by avoiding it.

I understand completely, I've had one for the past 2 months now and my doctor has been trying to help but its not going away. Try a mix of yoga, meditation and if that doesnt work you may have to go on a pain reliever. Vicodin is nice but shortlived the pain does come back, you could try that while you are trying others to figure out what you need. I have also noted that 3 ibuprofen and a cup of coffee work nicely. Its strange but it works for me.
