HOMONYMES or HOMONYMS.

Two words are homonyms if they are pronounced or spelled the same way but have different meanings.

Homonyms are words which have the same form (orthographic/phonetic) but unrelated meaning. If they only differ in one way they are called Homophones and Homographs respectively. In derivation, homonym means "has the same name"; homophone means "has the same sound"; homograph means "written the same".

According to wkipedia a homonym is a word that has the same spelling and pronunciation as another word but a different meaning. The example they gave was fluke which can be a stroke of luck, the fins on a whales tail,or the end parts of an anchor.

Hi,

I am a linguist who studies all these phenomenoa.

"Homo" in Latin means "same". "phone" means sound. So, homophones means the words with similar sounds. But they have DIFFERENT SPELLING. Ex, sea-see

"nym" in Latin means "name". So homonym denotes the words that have the same name. Here, same name means same spelling. So homonyms are the words that have similar sounds and SIMILAR SPELLING. ex- bank-bank . One bank is the place where you deposit your money. Another bank is the edge of the river.

"graph" in Latin means "spelling". So homographs are the words with similar spellings. They have different sounds. Ex- read-read.
One is the present tense of the verb read, and the other is the past or perfective tense form of read.

A homonym is each of two words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling (e.g., to , too , and two ); in other words, a homophone.
