The archives on dowload.com have been scanned & confirmed virus-free, and some of the programs like SpyBot and AVG free are as good (if not better) than many commercial programs.
When dealing with cracked/bootleg copies of software from the warez newsgroups or secret sites, you're much more likely to run across worms/trojans and other crap you don't wan't... Instead of getting hooked up, it's a nasty hook in the bait ;)

Go to cnet.com and use their downloads. They have a list on the left hand side.. chose Anti-Spy / Anti Virus .. and click on that . Some of the programs are free ! Good Luck ! :)

We suggest AVG free edition, Nortons doesnt catch trojans very well. Visit www.free.grisoft.com or www.filehippo.com (thats a free software site).

go to http://www.majorgeeks.com and click on "anti-virus" on the left, there is this free and good anti virus, it's called AVG, download it, and then click on "anti-spyware" and choose a free anti-spyware program.
