He might just be getting used to his new home. Try giving him cat treats, catnip, or adding wet cat food to the dry (if you give him that). He could be stressed out. Buy him a toy, and if he doesn't perk up go see a vet.

You don't say how long you have had this cat. He MUST eat, no more than three days of "fasting" or he can seriously damage his liver.
So even if it has been only two days he needs to be seen by a vet for some fluids to keep him hydrated and possible intravenous feeding.
You can get some Rescue Remedy from a health foods store and start treating him for the emotional issues surrounding his change in life circumstances. A bottle is less than $20. You simply shake the bottle well and apply three or four drops to the fur between his ears, as many times a day as you can. This is utterly benign as far as having physical effects and is extrememly important to help him heal emtionally. You may find that he will start eating almost right away.
This may help him TODAY. If it works and he eats you will have saved the expense of a vet trip. If it doesn't work that quickly you can make an appointment anyway and cancel it if the situation resolves. Even so, give it to him. If he has to go to the vet that is further stress for him and the RR will treat that.

An 8 year old cat is an old cat to adapt to a new family. Cats are not like dogs, dogs will be fine anywhere with anyone at any age, but Cats have different personalities, they don't like changes and when they happen it takes a while for them to adapt. The best you can do is to leave him alone, make sure he knows where his food, water and cat litter is and leave him alone, he will eventually come to you. Let him smell around, if you can buy him a cat tower that would be great, old cats don't really like cat toys anymore but a cat tower they always love. Good luck!

He is probably grieving for his owner. How sad.
Give him LOTS of cuddles, some special treats (baby meat may get him going) and some toys. If there is a way to get something that belonged to him in his old home (piece of owner's clothing, special blanket, etc), this will definitely help ease his loss.
When we place a kitten in a new home, we always send a little receiving blanket that's rubbed on mom & littermates. And anyone else who is special. Even after years of being in their new home, the "kittens" (now cats) cherish these "blankies".
Give him a week or two and if he's still the same, take him to the vet.
Good Luck!

make sure the water is fresh (change it a few times a day about 4 times a day if you don't have a drink well pet fountain) keep the food out. he is probably trying to adjust to the new environment. encourage drinking as much as you can. if he hasn't drank anything every hour or 2 hrs syring feed him 1 or 2 syringe fulls of water just so he stays hydrated. maybe start this tonight give him some time to come around on his own. if by tomorrow he still isn't eatting or drinking on his own, get him to see the vet.

It is going to take him a while to get over his loss. He misses his family and probably can't understand what happened. Give him time.
I adopted a big cat from the shelter a couple of years ago. He did the same thing, except he hid under the rafters in the basement and would only come out to eat or drink when I wasn't around. Now he sleeps on my pillow with his head on my forehead. I can't sit in a chair without him in my lap.
Give your kitty time. He's just homesick. You might want to take him to the Vet's to make sure he isn't sick too.

The cat that you have just inherited is mourning and fretting for its previous owner, he will eat and drink when he is ready. All I can suggest is that you give him time and patience, and let him know that you are there for him by patting and the occasional cuddle never hurts.
Good Luck

he is probably grieving as he lost his owner and now is in a different house. If he is still not better in 2 weeks or if the cat is losing weight, take him to the vet to be looked at.

He misses his old owner and is sad. If you know what his favorite food is, give it to him and lots of petting and love. But, a vet visit would be good too if it continues.
