They are looking to check your stability and credit rating--very interesting as it is usually the other way around (women asking men)--or they may be looking for a sugar momma! Next time the question is asked, smile very politely and say "Why would you want to know that?"

Some men try to assess how hard working you are by the size of your income, and that is always reflected in whether or not you own or rent, other guys just see the privacy issue, if you live in an apartment there might be less privacy than if you live in your own house.
I find the question a bit intrusive but the subject will always arise sooner or later, when they ask you you can always answer with a question, like take a guess or why do you ask...that always seems to give you some insight as to why he is asking.

It might be an innocent question, or it might be a bit nosey, especially if asked on a first date. I'd go by your intuition. How does it come up during the course of a conversation?

And renting does not necessarily mean you're dumb. I have a guy who's a millionaire renting a room in my house right now, because he just moved to town and wants to spend a few months to find the right place.

And it might make sense if you're timing the real estate market, or if you're single and the payments are cheap enough.

Men have a lot to lose financially with marriage and relationships, checking to see if a woman you're interested in is financially secure on her own is critical if you are thinking long-term.

It's the 21st century, guys don't have to settle for dating women who live month to month and have huge credit card bills.

3 differnet reasons,

1. THey are asking what are your monthy expenses.

2. they want to know how much money that you have.

3. If you are renting and the relationship gets serious, if your renting it would be easier for you to dump your place and get a place together

Maybe they think your more together and have your priorities in order better if you own. Renting says your not ready to settle just yet although, maybe some prefer renters because they aren't ready to settle yet either.

Maybe they see more stability with a woman who owns her home, but be careful, they may be a sponge waiting to suck up your money. Could be scoping out wealthy women. Good Luck..

They may just be curious or they may want to talk about real estate.

I live in a house and most people assume I own it. I don't.

Personally I ask it to determine how smart a person is. You have to be pretty dumb to rent.
