He put humans on earth to take care of the Earth and the Animals. Humans had to be a little tough to do this.
The Lord may want the meek to inherit the earth so that the animals will then rule and humans will be on their menu list.

Eventually the meek [humble] will inherit the earth, this inheriantce comes as a gift from God,to whom the meek have committed themselves to humbly.
Keep reading in Pslam 37:34 Wait on the Lord,
And keep His Way,
And He shall exalt you to inherit the land.
When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
OR Pslam 37:9 For evildoers shall be cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.
It is the inheritance, a gift from God for those who humbly wait on the Lord.

I don't really follow your 'if God couldn't get it right' wording for he did nothing wrong.

God created humans with free will. He doesn't control us like puppets on strings. Adam and Eve choose to eat the fruit even tho they knew God forbidded it. Just like all other humans after them. Cain hid after killing Abel because he knew what he did was wrong. God got it right with us, it's us that are getting it wrong
