You should grow up and assume responsibility for your decisions. It's quite refreshing.

Hi nightingale. Its a little difficult to answer this without the bible because if you are Christian then all your beliefs/logic are derived from scripture. The way to look it I think is to remember that Jesus's death had a two-fold purpose. Before Christ died, those following God were required under Mosaic Law to make animal sacrifices to atone for their error. But when Christ came to earth this law from God was abolished as it was no longer required. Now we can pray THROUGH jesus his son to ask for forgiveness from God. Its like Jesus is the go between us and God because for the first time in human history since Adam -a perfect man- sinned another perfect life (Jesus's)had balanced the scales. Ultimately though Jesus's death will have an even greater blessing for us in the future because God tells us he died so that one day in the near future none of us will have to experience death again. If you remove the bible from this completely then I suppose you can say that one of the reasons we pray for forgiveness is so that we can always have a clean relationship with God and remain in his favour. To illustrate, if, as a child, your parents continually told you not to do something that was bad for you but you ignored them and remained on the same path then it is proof that you are not really sorry and that you dont respect them and eventually over time, it will damage your relationship with them. This is the same way that God feels about us. We are his children and when we sin he needs to know firstly that we are sorry and secondly that we are going to try our very best to improve. Thats what it means to love someone, no matter what the circumstances. I really hope that this all makes sense! take care hon.

If you want my opinion and not what the bible teaches then what I have to say would be worthless! Where can my knowledge come from about this matter if it doesn't come from God? It is a matter concerning God and Christ and yourself so the Bible is of imperative importance. My own opinions without learning what the bible has to say wouldn't mean anything as how would I know without being taught first? You have to go to the bible to get these answers you ask and given a reply accurately.
God can only forgive your sins if you truly repent and turn around from your sins. It is in Jesus Christ's name that you can be given forgiveness because his death of his perfect sinlesss life was to pay the price of your imperfect sinful life providing you have repented and asked for repentance of behalf of Christ's ransom sacrifice. But if you keep on continueing in willful sin then you have not truely repented and thus not forgiven. You are forgiven by not only words of repentance but also by actions that note true repentance.

This is my personal experiance. I went to church and after the service a group of us asked God to forgive us our sins based on the work of Jesus on the cross and I felt like a 1000 lbs were lifted off of me and I was instantly filled with joy, peace and above all love. This is because God wants us to know what Jesus did for us and believe it. If we don't believe it nothing happens but if we do, we have to humble ourselves and ask God in prayor to forgive us and He will. He is a good God. If I can be forgiven anybody can.

Jesus died for our sins, all of them, but we must accept His sacrifice to finish the fact. I could buy you a Christmas present, and it belongs to you. It's your's for the taking. I offer it to you ,but if you never reach out and take it, you never have the benefit of it. A person who does not believe in God and His son will not accept the gift of salvation because they don't believe in the One who offers it. God has done all the work, we just need to embrace what He has done for us. The forgiveness is there, but it is not given until we confess our need of it and accept the payment for it that was made for us.

Generally, Christians believe that Jesus is the key to heaven. By dying for their sins doesn't mean that all sin is abolished; it means that any sins committed can be forgiven. It goes back to Adam and Eve who committed what Christians call 'original sin.' Christians believe that all beings are born with original sin; until Jesus died, this was an eternal stain; Jesus got rid of that stain.
What puzzles me is that some Christians think that after they accept Jesus, they are born again and therefore all sins are automatically abolished; Jesus never said this in the New Testament; I think that Jesus was all about love..Love God, love each other. If we truly love God; we would try our best not to sin against him. If we truly love each other, then we would not sin against each other.
While both Christians and Muslims attack each other on their religious beliefs, I really don't see the need for it. I think that both faiths has their positives and negatives and there's so many negatives in my Muslim faith that I must deal with them before I dare attack Christians on their faith; as Jesus said, 'Remove the plank from your own eye and then you will be able to see the speck of dirt in another's eye.
The Prophet Mohammad also said, 'To each his own.'

Salvation and eternal life are free gifts, paid for by the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. But like any other gift, it must be accepted to do you any good. How do you accept it? By showing your appreciation to Jesus for it, and repenting from your sin. This does not 'waste' God's grace, but demonstrates that you truly are sorry for your sin, and are not just giving Him lip service.

Yes, God forgives our sins. Actually if you are trully saved, then Jesus blood covers your sins, therefore when God looks at you, all He sees is the blood of Jesus.

I confess my sins to God, not necessarily to be forgiven, (they already are) I do it to acknowledge to God that I know what I did is wrong, and to clear it off my conscience. I don't want to walk around all the time knowing that I have sinned against God and feel guilty about it.

Hope this answered your question.

As far as the comment that Spades made. "God can only forgive your sins if you truly repent and turn around from your sins". I believe this is wrong. We are sinful human beings. It is impossible to completely "turn around" from your sins. If you turn from all your sins, then that would make you perfect. If you are perfect, then that would rank you with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. And that is hypocritical and blasphemous. It is impossible to turn from sin. It may be acheivable to quit cussing, smoking, drinking, stealing, killing, etc. but, it is quite impossible to keep your mind from wandering away from sin. Have you ever hated or disliked someone??? That is a sin. Have you ever had lustful thoughts for someone other than your spouse?? That is a sin. I noticed you are Jehovah Witness and if what you said is correct, the next time you see a person walking down the street and you think, "whoa, he/she is hot." or you think to yourself, "man, they are so stupid, I cannot believe that they don't believe what I am telling them, I hate them for it." Then I guess you never trully repented and turned away from your sin. Therefore, you have not been fully forgiven... See what I mean????? Makes perfect logical sense to me.

He gave us the opportunity to have our sins forgiven. The bible does tell us that we have to ask for them to be forgiven.

It is also not just our actual mistakes that he forgives. In the future, he will take away the effects of Adam's sin from mankind, this includes imperfection, sickness, old age, death, and the estranged relationship with God.

In order to be forgiven of our sins, we have to ask for forgiveness, and repent of our sin (turn away from). We need to ask for forgiveness each day and keep short accounts with God.

Isn't this a rather hypocritical question? I thought Christians were supposed to be good people, but you treat sinning on a par with changing your underwear. It has to be done daily "oh god won't mind if I sin, I will say sorry later!"

This is why I am so against organised religion.....

GO FOR IT VENSHU, I did!
