If you don't drink a lot of champagne, then you shouldn't even be spending $50 for Moet. Try a good California sparkling wine, like Domaine Chandon or Gloria Ferrar. They're available for about half of what Moet is costing you and I think they're just as good. The Dome Perignons of the world are just for people to show they can afford them.

It depends on taste. There are Champagnes even cheaper than the price you have given that taste almost as good as the top brands. The only reason they don't command the price is because they don't come from the right vineyards. Having said that, these are few and far between. NB: I actually prefer Moet to Dom Perignon, but that's personal taste - Krug is my faveourite, of those I've tasted so far ... no one I know has been stupid enough to pay the price for Crystal etc when I have been around..

Dom Perignon is the prestige vintage of Moet Chandon, not every year is a vintage year. Certain characteristic of that year make it prestige which is decided by the makers...and it makes it more special than the other years, especially since they can go several years or more without having a "special" year. This also makes it more expensive. The link below provides a little bit of the history of how they got the name, ect....

Dom is Moet's special blend. And the person who made the statement about it only being called champagne if it's from the region in France is very correct.

Keep in mind that those expensive champagnes, like Dom or Cristal, are acquired tastes. Just like you grossed out on your first sip of beer, these are like that.
Personally, when I need a sparkling wine (it's only "champagne" if it comes from the Champagne region of France) I like an Italian one: Mondoro. Yummmm...
