Life's not fair. School systems often loan instruments, or a graduate may give him the old one. Ask the band teacher for assistance, maybe even a college band, when they buynew ones.

Some school bands have a few instruments that belong to the school that a student can use. You should check into that. He will have to choose from what they have, but at least he will be able to participate. Possibly you could find a used instrument on eBay or somewhere? Or is there anyone in your family who has graduated and has an old band instrument they aren't using anymore that he can have?

You have NOT failed him.

Call the school counselor.
Call the school band director.

There are funds available for this. Do not let pride or vanity to ask for something keep this from happening. If it's important enough, there is a way if you are willing to make the sacrifice necessary. And if all else fails, see if you grandson is able to contribute to rent it. Work in the neighborhood, stay after school to help a teacher, etc. You seem to want him to have the best so don't forget to teach him that HE can do things on his own. he doesn't have to wait until someone gives it to him. That's not the mindset you want him to have, I'm sure.

Most school bands have instruments that were donated for students who can not afford to buy to use - check with your local schools - they should have a similar program!@ PS We brought our sons instrument from a pawn shop!@

Have u talked to any of the teachers or counselors at his school? Many times a school will have some type of program that will in cases like yours, especially if he has some musical abilities. It's worth asking around.
