They tend to be safer than real trees because you don't have to worry about the sap or anything having been sprayed on them while they were being grown - less likely that kitty will find anything to chew on, too.

Just be sure to use either fabric or plastic, shatterproof ornaments - stay away from glass and avoid round, ball-like ornaments that may be a temptation to little paws.

One more hint: for their first Christmas, most of the time I put up just the bottom half of the tree for a few days until the kittens get used to it then start adding top branches, ornaments, etc.

Oh, and STAY AWAY FROM ANGEL HAIR OR TINSEL!!! Highly dangerous and too much of a temptation - too many animals end up at the vet's every year with a wad in their intestines!

They are actually safer than a real tree. Someone offered the suggestion of putting it up, then gradually adding SAFE ornaments (no glass ornaments, no angel hair or tinsel). Great ideas.

We have 10 cats, and I finally quit putting up a tree. The last one was metal (small metal tree that sits on a flat surface). They destroyed that too, including the bulbs that were literally wired on.

:-P

Guess the cats rule supreme here! :-)

We've had cats for years, and we always use artificial Christmas trees. There haven't been any problems at all. There were more problems with real ones because the cats tended to try to climb them.

I think the trees are as long as they don't have a lot of pieces falling off kitty can eat. I know the icicles aren't that you buy to decorate the tree. Kitty can ingest these and it can become logged in his or her digestive tract and can cause death. I don't buy these anymore once I found that out cause I was always finding them in my cat's mouths and having to pull them out anyway so they do eat them. Also, if kitty is chewing on the lights that could be bad and the glass ornaments that you decorate can be very dangerous. I think you need to pay more attention to the decorations than the tree myself.

exploding cats?? yeah, right...fake trees can be dangerous to cats though, if they chew on them and eat the "needles" they can wind up with intestinal blockage - same thing with tinsel, and be careful of the ornament hangers, too. Cats and Christmas trees - not a good mix. Mine thinks it's a big ol' climbing toy that I've put up just for her - I spend half the time hauling her furry butt out of the branches!

That depends on what the tree is made of and if you decorate with artificial tinsel. Cats will eat that . Bad stuff!
