Go for a Land-Rover the Discovery 3 (LR3) is very good

A jeep liberty has a great crash rating and is pretty good overall, but the Toyota Sequoya is much safer and is all around better.

i like the grand jeep cherokee better then the liberty
the cherokee has more room and stuff in and the go better in the snow and stuff like that

They are good vehicles, The newer ones have great reliabilty. Although they don't hold there value that well.
DO NOT buy a land rover as suggested. I have worked with them for years, they are garbage due to the company being cash strapped and sold to Ford.
A good alternative is Toyota
