I was wondering if anyone is taking this medication and it helped them lose weight after you got on it. I was just diagnosed and it has been extremely hard for me to lose weight, also I have terrible mood swings. I was wondering if this would help me.

Hi - I have been on Levoxyl (actually, the generic form, which is Levothyroxine) since I was diagnosed in May of 2002. I haven't lost a pound yet and I never felt good - ever. I found a FABULOUS endocrine doc and he put me on Cytomel in addition to the Levoxyl - still fat, but I feel a little better. Weight has NEVER been an issue with me & I am still in denial about all the weight I gained - I have quite a few other health issues that I am sure contribute to my "fatness". Now some people get on meds and BOOM, the weight falls off (that's what I hear anyway) but I am not that lucky. I do hope that someday I'll be a size 8 (I was a 5/6 right before I got sick) again, but who knows.

I started taking synthroid in 1976 and it works well (my thyroid had to be removed) I lost weight when I went on it but I also was on a strict diet and exercise, no magic pills you may lose a small amount with just the pill but most of us put weight on over a long period and should not lose more than 2 pounds a week. I wish you good luck and want to say be sure to take it in the morning and not with food. get checked often to make sure your does is correct as if you are on too much you will get shaky and can gain wt. with too much hormone replacement

My wife is currently taking synthroid for hypothyroidism. The mood swings she used to get is a result of the medication not being the proper dose. A blood test is done every three months to insure that she is still on the correct dosage. Any changes from previous blood tests changes the dosage. As for the weight, she has lost some, but, you should still regulate your diet accordingly by eating as healthy as possible.
