For my son's first birthday, we had a regular birthday cake for the family that came over to celebrate and had a special cake made up special just for him. He tore into that thing and had icing from one ear to the other. I don't think he got a single bite into his mouth, but it was a precious moment.

a clown and lots of family and friends. or you can go somewhere like the park or a swimming pool. it depends on what the little boy likes to do most. at the age of one my daughter loved going to the park so that is where we had her first birthday

He's only one, so it's not like you can have his classmates or friends over. I think just a nice family gathering with cake and ice cream would be appropriate. You must get balloons though, and in lots of different colors. He'll be fascinated with them.

Get a babysitter and go out with your husband.
Or you could invite some family over for cake and ice cream.
Seriously, he is one!!! Save the big blow-outs for later, when he will remember and appreciate it!
