It's made w/ Guinness and Bass beers. The Bass is lighter in color and poured halfway into the glass. Using a spoon upside down on the rim, the Guinness (dark in color) is poured slowly in such a way as to float on top of the Bass giving the glass a two-tone effect. There is a special tool one can get besides the spoon but I forget what it's called or where you can get it. Also, one can order a "half and half" which is the same thing but can have different stouts or ales used.

A black and tan is half a glass of Bass beer with the remainder filled slowly (poured over a spoon) with Guiness. The beers are two different densities and they will remain seperate in glass with the black Guiness on top and the tan Bass on the bottom. It takes the edge off of Guiness for those who feel it is too strong.

A Black and Tan is half Guiness and half Harp (can be substituted with Bass). The beers are poured so that one floats on top of the other and do not mix.

In England its definatly Guiness and Brown ale as one other person has said. Snake bite for the person who thinks guiness is involved is actually lager and cider mixed. As for what it tastes like - its a bit of an acquired taste - for me not worth it

I'm not a drinker so if that's a mixed drink I couldn't tell you, but I do know that a black and tan is a hunting hound used for hunting coon, bear and possibly a few other species. They are considered an excellent breed for tracking.
