My kettle has just packed in. I know that it's a dodgy connection between the base and the kettle.
How can I clean up the connection? It looks a bit small to get a peice of emery paper inside - (do they still sell that stuff?)

No, I am not a cheapskate - no offense taken :) I can think of far better things to spend money on rather than kettles.

Im thinking of the planet and its finite resources.
Buy a new one? Don't be so wasteful. I'm looking for some constructive answers here.

It's too dangerous to mess about with a kettle once it breaks. They are so cheap chuck the thing out and get a nice new one. And like other people have said, I am sure you can work out an alternative means of boiling water (you do know that is what a kettle does to water right?)

I appreciate your desire not to be wasteful, but a DIY job on a kettle could end up being far more expensive to you and the planet! Buy a new one - you might find a more energy efficient one, and you'd also be supporting the economy, providing work for people etc. Boil water in a pan, have a cuppa, and think about it - you know it makes sense!

I have to agree with the don't mess with it answers, buy a new kettle and rather than the 5 quid cheapie from tescos look for one that is efficient (you can buy them in tescos as well they are just more expensive, argos has a good range as well check out a few websites see who has the best deal on a good efficient kettle)

We have a spare kettle for just this situation.
Buy another kettle would be safer than trying to mend "a dodgy connection".
Make sure you disconnect from the electricity and then use a toothbrush on it, see if that works just for today.

Shove a small piece of aluminium foil in there instead
Tesco sells kettles for £5

Just boil a pan of water for now and buy a new kettle tomorrow.

DO NOT 'shove a small piece of aluminium' in the socket ! You'll blow the whole circuit, possibly cause a fire, and be arrested for criminal damage. You'll also look a bit of a turnip.

Buying a new one is a good idea. Be safe.

if you live in the UK you can get one for less than a fiver in Tesco!!

boil a pan of water just now though instead of electrocuting yourself as you try to fix the kettle...typical man lol

Wow can you really tell me your gonna go through all that trouble of trying to clean it, when you can just buy a new one for a fiver.
Anyway use a cotton bud with nail varnish remover on it.
