Here is what you should know:
1st thing is first.... I have 3 large dogs including a black lab, I highly reccomend crate training. You may think it's crule but trust me it's not!! Your not gonna have the dog in the crate all the time! When you have a puppy it is best to crate train, it really helps with potty training!! Heres what you do: go to wal-mart get a crate that will be big enough for her when she is full grown!
*make sure it has a divider it it*
Place the divider in the cage so the pup will have room to lay down thats it! Put the puppy in there with all it's toys/chewy things at night. no food or water (he will wine and cry he is trying to train you!) dont give in. When he crys and you or kids go to him he learns that if he crys you come to him! So he will cry more! So first thing in the morning leash walk him outside (if you let him run free he will want to play) Dont play with the pup untill he "gos" then play... if he plays then he stops to "go" and you run him in the house he will think that when he "gos" outside he's not aloud to play anymore so he will "go" inside. OH and make a real big deal when he dose "go" tell her she is a "good puppy"
If she "gos" inside, say "bad girl" in a stern deep voice and take her outside. Dont put her in the cage when she is bad, b/c it will make her not want to be in there! AND dont rub her face in the "mess" it may teach her to eat the poo....
OK SO Everytime the puppy eats take him out! If he dosnt go outside place him in the cage wait 5-10 mins then take him out again!
Remember no playing untill he "go's" outside!
Puppy Chow is ok food. You should get her a puppy food that says "large breed" on it. Purina one is very good. Sience Diet is also good! Anything you can find at a large pet store is usually good food! Dont leave her food down all the time b/c some dogs dont know when to stop eating and she may get FAT when she gets older! Feed her a cup twice a day.
As far as toys... depends on her... buy a bunch and see what she likes to play with!
The Vet stuff..... all puppies need vaccines! Usually a series one every 3-4 weeks. I do not know what the laws are in Canada... call a local vet, tell them you have a new puppy and they will have you come in and they should go over everything from there!!
Hope this has been helpfull!!
GOOD LUCK with her!!

I have a female lab. First thing I want to tell you is that they are VERY high energy dogs. They need a lot of exercise. They usually don't calm down until age two. I am telling you this because a lot of lab puppies end up in shelters because the owners did not know what they are getting into.
They are very big chewers so make sure you get her a lot of toys to chew on. Get the toys made for heavy chewers.
As a puppy I fed my girl three times a day, breakfast lunch and dinner. I did that until she was bout 6 months old, then I no longer came home at lunch time and now continue to feed her twice a day.
Take her to the vet and the vet will let you know about all routine vaccinations. I know at least in my area the first vet visit is free.
Also I bought the book, "The idiot's Guide to Labrador Retrievers" It gives a lot of info about the breed, what to expect, etc. I thought it was very helpful, I still will reference it on occasion when something new is going on.
Good luck to you and enjoy! Once you get over those puppy years they are the best dogs!

You need a flat collar - like nylon that can be let out as she grows. You will probably go through a few of these - labs have big necks. You will need a leash, food and water bowls, and chew toys.
I feed twice a day to try and avoid bloat. Dogs with big chests - like your lab - are prone to having their stomachs twist. I feed in the morning and night to try and prevent this - two small meals instead of one big one.
Purina is an ok food, but I would look into a better (premium food). She can eat dog biscuits, but hold off on ppl food. Labs can get overweight rather quickly and it is better for them to stay slender until full grown - @2years.
Make sure and talk to your vet about her vaccines - the breeder will tell you when she needs her next one.
Labs are high energy dogs! I hope you have enough of your own to keep up!
Enjoy! They are a blast!
Be fair, but firm.

I have a lab and they are great dogs. Your first step is to find a good vet. The dog will need regularly vaccines for the first year or so. Labs are chewers so if you value your shoes, get a chew toy. "Kongs" are great and really hard to destroy. You can put a treat in them and keep your puppy occupied for hours. Follow the feeding directions on the puppy chow or do what the vet says for feeding. My adult dog gets two cups in the morning and night. Make the puppy eat after you do, it teaches that you are the master. Good luck!

First thing ya have to do is take your pup to the vet for a check up and shots. If you got it from a pet shop you should have a record and if its a pure breed you would have pappers for that also. Its a damn shame but alot of people call themselves a puppy breeder just because they have a few pups. This does not make one a breeder....it makes one a puppy mill pup. I ran a pup shop for years and i knew where my pups came from who took care of them and my breeders always skipped a heat cycle. It keeps the pups more pure. Read up on cage training, its the best way to potty train. just put a bowl and a small toy in the right size cage. NO BLANKETS OR TOWELS. dogs are VERY clean and will not live where they go potty. Congrats on the pup. It's #1 on the list of best dogs, great temperment, personality and easy to take care of. give him fresh water all the time. puppy chow is not the best food but its good. There are some others you can get at a puppy shop....puppy shop...not a pet store. Its also a good thing to give the pup a little wet food/can food....not alot just mix in a bit ,it adds flavor and will not hurt your dog. I fed 70 pups 2 times a day with dry/wet food. There are plenty of places on the net for help....just google lab. Take care of your baby....love him...he already loves you.
best of luck
feel free to e-mail me with any questions thepuppyguy at the yahoo place< not sure my e-mail will show up ,just send it to yahoo with thepuppyguy

Labs are the best dogs, I love mine to no end. They do have lots of energy as puppies so make sure you give her plenty of exercise. They do like to chew so I have always made sure my Lab has plenty of things to chew, the Kong toys are great. Labs love to swim and retrieve things so I have always encouraged that and made it a big part of his exercise routine. My Lab just turned a year and until recently I did not like any of the foods out there. You may want to consider Royal Canin Labrador Retriever 30 when you change to adult food. Since my Lab has been on it his coat looks great (totally reduced his shedding) and he has toned up a lot. Labs are known for putting on weight which is not good for their hips and other joints. Royal Canin makes breed specific foods that addresses each of the breeds needs. Like their food for Labs is higher in protein and low in fat to address the weight problem and they also have the essential viatims to help their special coats. Check out their website royalcaninusa or I believe their is also one for Canada. The web site has tons of helpful information. Never feed her large meals as they grow older they are candidates for bloat ( the stomach twists and its life threaten) so try three well portioned meals and try to limit activity after play. Congraulations on getting a great new puppy, Labs are the most loving and affectionate dogs. They are very intelligent and easy to train, I got mine when he was 7 weeks and within in two weeks he had house training down.

Make sure you walk and or run your puppy/dog daily. Make sure you have lots and lots of chew toys. Labs love to chew. If you can take your dog somewhere where he or she can learn to swim, labs love to swim. All dogs will let you know when they are sick, you will figure it out. Just take your dog to the vet for it's first round of shots, they will fill you in on what you need to do after that. I really recommend a puppy class, you will learn so much about your puppy and what to expect.

My hubby and I just got a lab puppy... watch out they're chewers! Get some chew toys to keep her from chewing on your furniture and carpet. Ours loves raw hide chews and raw hide bones. Plus they're bread to hunt... so she'll love to play fetch and probably won't take too much effort to get her to return with the thrown object. But beware birds are a big distraction outside. :) Ours loves to chase the birds. As for the feeding, most puppy food bags have the amount to feed per weight on the side of the bag. Get a bag of treats, to help with training... only 10% or less of their daily food intake should be treats. We split up our puppy's food in half and give half in the morning and half in the late afternoon.
Hope this helps... if there's anything else you wanna know just email me.
