A Volvo is probably your best bet... If you plan on keeping the car for a few years and need something with a little more room as the kids get bigger, The Toyata Previa and the Honda Odysey are good mini vans...
Remember the safest vehicle is only a supplement to a defensive driver. Always be alert. Don't drink and drive, don't drive when you're too tired to stay alert....

Recently Renault have been making the safest cars all recieving the maximum score in the euro ncap tests.
However if your from America and can't get a Renault I would reccomend a Volvo and needing the space for 3 car seats I would reccomend the Volvo XC90. It is rather expensive though but if you can afford it that's the one to go for.

Kia Sedona/Hyundai Entourage. 5 star safety rating on both front and side. It's cheap and comes with the longest warranty in the business. 10 years/100,000 miles.
