In a round about way it reduces the threat of atomic weapons being used in the US because there is one less country with the technological capability of building a nuclear weapon in the middle east.

No one knew for sure that Saddam was not working on a nuclear or chemical program. Saddam may or may not be interested in assisting Al Quida in deploying these systems.
