It looks to me like it was a snake that convinced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Am I missing something? Does "serpent" translate as "Satan" in your version of Genesis? Or did somebody make up that part later, because for a reptile to talk somebody into doing something is just plain silly? (Snakes can't talk, remember?)

The word "Satan", composed of the Hebrew letters Sin Teth Nun, does NOT appear in Genesis 3. You can repeat it as many times as you want, it's still not there. I checked KJV, NIV, and the Septuagint. You'll have to come up with something besides "Everyone knows that Satan tempted Eve." Everyone knew the earth was the center of the universe, too.

Per the Old Testemant it is The Serpent that deceives Eve. No where in Genesis does the name Satan appear.
And for your second question, no serpent does NOT translate in Satan. The word Satan is Hebrew for Advesary.

One of the most famous events of Bible History is that of Eve being deceived by Satan. The common perception of that incident is that Satan waited and caught Eve out when she was on her own, that Satan deceived her alone, after which she then went to Adam and somehow beguiled, or charmed, him into sin. From that comes the further erroneous assumption that "Satan got to Adam through his wife." The Bible however plainly states that Adam was right there with Eve the whole time that Satan was talking with her. Eve was not alone with Satan i.e. "she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her" (Genesis 3:6 KJV).

The general thought is that Satan used the serpent to tempt Eve. For allowing itself to be used in this way, God punished the serpent by making it slither in the dust rather than walking on legs. As for snakes talking, the famous psychic, Jeanne Dixon claimed that she received her ability to see the future when a snake crawled around her bed and spoke to her and told her she would be able to see the future. Seems like Satan is still in business.

Cute
God told the man (Adam) not to eat the fruit or he would die.
The man told the woman (Eve) not to touch the fruit or she would die.
Satan wanted both to disobey God forcing God to change his purpose.
Satan deceived the woman by having a serpent touch the fruit... when it didn't die that likely caught her curiousity. Perhaps the serpent then tasted the fruit, she likely wondered why it didn't die? Then when it appeared that is was talking she became confused. Satan used this to imply God had with held something good from them. Then told her the 1st lie "You will not die, but be changed to become like God".
By the way this same lie is being repeated until this day. Many people think as they have been taught by religion that you don't really die, you change and become like God. Immortality of the soul was the lie Satan fueled from the start.
Truth is we die just like God said. "Wages sin pays is death" Rom. 6:23
Where it says she was deceived? 1 Tim. 2:14
Where it says Serpent = Devil? Rev. 12:9

The closest I can come to answering the question is this. A promise was made between two. The snake is real but not in the form we know it to exist. The snake symbolically represents our impatience to wait and be faithful. example. One day I asked a person to do a job for me, We were in an agreement, My thoughts could not wait until the start of the job, they went on to think the job through and prompted my body to move toward doing the job myself with disregard of the other I had made the commitment to. that was the beginning of awareness for me. fortunately I was also stopped by my conscious before I violated a trust and that is how I know the Snake is real and it is named the snake.

Geniesi 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
woman Gen 3:13, 2nd Cor 11:3, 1st Tim 2:14
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Satan came to Eve in the form of that serpant. Eve was very new to all that was around her,and for a serpant to talk to her wasn't unusual because she was totally innocent and did not know it was satan desguised to trick her into disobeying God.
It's not that complicated. What can complate it, is the unwillingness to accept fully the word of God.

No, snakes can't talk. It is made plain that satan assumed the shape of the serpant. He knew that by doing so, he could convince Eve. She was a new person and wasn't surprised at a snake talking like we are today.

The serpent was/is Satan. The deception is implied by the events that took place. At the time of the deception Satan was in a different form that he is now. He manifested on the physical plane as a serpent form. Today he is in a spiritual form.

Do you really want an answer to this question?
The Genesis story of creation is not intended to be an eye-witness report; but allegorical - a story used to tell a spiritual truth.
God certainly created the world and he created mankind (including women). There had to have been a first man and a first woman.
When created we were perfect and in full communion with God. But then we rebelled - from the very first. You see we humans do not have it within our power to stay perfect and holy.
That's what the Genesis story is about.
In the Resurrection story Genesis comes full circle: "As in Adam ALL have sinned; even so in Christ ALL have been made new".

Satan came in the form of a snake if you read the commentaries on th eBible you would know this. Also snakes could speak but their ability to do so was taken away by G-d as apunishment for enicing Eve.
