boyfriend'girlfriend means you are only seeing that person. Dating you can be seeing other people and you aren't ready to be serious yet.

In my opinion when you're dating a guy/girl you are simply spending time together and getting to know each other. This is the fun part when you shouldn't restrict yourself to dating only one person lol! Once you decide that you like them and dont want to continue seeing other guys/girls (and that they are not a weirdo) you can have a talk and ask them to be your boy/girlfriend... ie make it 'exclusive'.

Dating implies a casual relationship, most likely dating others, too. A boyfriend or girlfriend indicates some sort of commitment.

My boy/girlfriend means a level of committment to each other. Usually it means not dating anybody else, "going steady,"--a couple to the rest of the world. We are dating just means that you like to go out on dates with this person, and may not be that committed to them. It's the earlier stage of dating, before you label that person as your boy/ girlfriend. But you still say that you are dating your boy/girlfriend, so it gets confusing.
Like I am dating person X, but person Y asked me out, so I'll go out with him on Saturday night. If person X was my boyfriend, and person Y asked me out, I would say no, I have a boyfriend.

We are dating means that you are admitting to spending time with this individual and are not seeing anyone else but you are reluctant to say that you are 100% theirs, for whatever reason. It may be that the speaker is unsure of the other's committment or that the speaker him/herself is unsure of their feelings. Calling someone your boy/girlfriend is clearly exclusive. For some people though, there is no difference.

Dating is still getting to know each other and not sure if its serious yet. Boyfriend\ girlfriend is you like each other and made the first step to being serious with each other, and should not be dating anyone else. :)

To call someone a boyfriend or girlfriend is much more serious than just dating someone. At least it was back in my day.
