Does 'The rght to life liberty & the pursuit of happieness" in the declaration of Independence have any legal meaning or is it just a 'political' slogan with no legal meaning.
Are we free to have multible wives as some religions allow?
If not why not?
Where/when does the government have a right to protect me from myself. (seat belt laws.,helmet laws, 5150 laws [reckless indangerment/attempted suicide] , drug laws , ...)

There is suppose to be a seperation between the church and state so if someone who is not a christian lives in the country then they should not have to conform to laws that pertain to christians.
Some religions permit a husband to have as many as four wives.
The Bible also says that if a man should separte from his wife and jions with another then he has sined.
Does that mean divorce should be outlawed?
The founding fathers made a point of seperating church & state because they had 1st hand experience with churches haviing too much control and people with conflicting religions [catholics / protestants / quakers / etc] where prosecuted for (religious)laws that did not pertain to their perticular cult

Whether or not I wear a seat belt or a helmet not only does not affect anyone else. My death could result from many things and while these safety devices could 'help' save my life & IF I wanted my life saved IF then it would be prudent to wear them
They have their pluses and minuses
Some people who have worn them are alive BUT are paralyzed

It leads to diabetes, weight gain and other health problems, should sweats become illegal.

Good question. You sound like someone that might be interested in the Libertarian Party as they are asking many of the same questions you are.
The slogan, "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," appears to be very much defined in the eye of the beholder.
Currently, the US does NOT grant an unlimited right to life, because, rather than legislate legal reform and institute thorough rehabilitation programs, it prefers to invest billions of taxpayer dollars on a corporate prison industry that reforms no one, has a revolving door of recividists, and ultimately, results in the death penalty for all those that the system has failed.
Likewise, liberty is not an absolute right, but more a matter of whatever is fashionable politically at the time. At present, many Americans gullibly embrace the notion that increased safety can be purchased at the cost of sacrificed civil liberties. The result is no one is any safer, especially not from their own government.
As for "the pursuit of happiness," this is the most controversial of the three items listed. Americans, due primarily to their repressive Puritan heritage, do not trust happiness. We're all supposed to work hard, do our duty, then die so the next generation can work hard, do their duty, then die...etc., etc., ad infinitum. Our drug laws are the clearest manifestation of the extent to which our nation distrusts pleasure and happiness. Basically speaking, you can be shot in the head just for wanting to feel good, if the instrument of your pleasure is something verboten. They don't even have to announce themselves anymore before kicking in the door and opening fire.
As to the issue of multiple wives, this is primarily a cultural and religious issue, not one that the government should ban but rather legislate to ensure legal protections are in place for all parties involved.
Finally, does the government have the right to protect you from you? Maybe. Maybe not. I would suggest that their argument in favor of legislation has much to do with the extent to which your self-harm negatively impacts society, but if that were truly the case, alcohol and cigarettes would be completely illegal with severe penalties in place to prevent their manufacture and distribution. This question is probably the most difficult to consider. On the one hand, helmets save lives, and anyone who has ever had their head impact the pavement or other object cannot give enough thanks for the helmet they wore. On the other hand, does the government have the right to force you to wear a helmet? I suspect, I am in the same boat as most Americans: I want people to behave safely and with common sense, but I'm just not sure where the line is between personal liberty and the need for regulation, where it should be, and whether or not the government has already overstepped its limits.

What most people forget is that the Declaration states all of these rights and the most important part is that your rights end when they infringe on anothers. And everyone in this country needs to study the history of the Declaration and the men that wrote it because it was founded on Christian principles and that is just a fact.
Now some laws are pushing the envelope for sure and there is some gray area that maybe the founding fathers didn't or couldn't address, but the document in it's entirety and not addressed one statement at a time (like you are doing here) is an amazing, intelligent, well formed document.

You are asking many questions here. It did have a legal meaning when first written. Now people just make (politicians) their own rules and saying as they go along. - declaration of independence
No we are not free to have multiple wives or husband. There are laws for that, also in the bible it says honor your wife or husband.
The government has the right to protect you against yourselves, give you rules to follow, as long as they are to protect you, why resist them? Some of the laws that have been implemented were by parents and loved ones that have lost someone they care for.

Documents signed at the very beginning of the Republic are the foundation of this country. The country presently bears no resemblance to the original republic that was formed. Freedom is defined and re-defined by culture and means basically freedom from tyranny.
Society protects itself from harm like an organism so that rights are for the "common good".

Um...if you've been married, you'd know that having multiple wives probably isn't the ideal way to pursue "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"... ;-P
