I found myself in this position when I lost my husband last year. Our twins were 7 at the time, and it was a rough time for all of us.
Looking back, I know that I appreciated those that offered their condolences and added " let me know if there is anything that we can do". Although I didn't need the help then (or at least I thought), I did and found their comfort in the fact that they were not dismissing my feelings.
Whatever you do, be sure that it is from the heart.

Whatever you do, do not say "they are better off" or "they're in a better place" or "I know how you feel." Each person handles grief and the loss of a loved one differently. My suggestion would be to say "I am sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do to help you (cook, help clean, write thank you's, or just listen) please do not hesitate to call me."

Whatever you say, do not say, "I know how you feel" unless the same thing has happened to you.
When my little boys died, people who never lost a child would say that and I wanted to slap them.
Just let the person know how saddened you are by their loss. Sometimes, they really need to talk. Be there for them.

Nothing if it not needed; give a shoulder and a hug instead. Actions speak louder than words anyway.

Occasionally, well-timed silence has more eloquence than speech.

"I am so sorry for your loss." Sometimes the less said is better.
