There are central issues, and side issues. You picked a good scripture to tell the difference. It doesn't matter if you wear jewelry or not, or play musical instruments or not. What matters is OBEYING what Jesus told us to do. That's why Sunday Christians and Christmas/Easter Christians are in a lot more trouble than they think. You have to walk with Jesus DAILY, or you don't know Him at all.

There were no "Christians" at the time. There were Jews and Romans and probably a few Egyptians, Assyrians, etc. travelling through. After Jesus' death, his followers could not convince Jews he was the messiah since there was obviously no "peace on earth." The only people left to convert were Romans. How many Roman men do you think were willing to be circumcized in order to follow Jesus? Since that wasn't working out at all, his followers no longer called themselves Jews and dispensed with the "old covenant" of circumcision and created the "new covenant" of... eternal life for "believers."

There were no "Christians" at this time (before the cross), rather a multitude of Jesus followers and his disciples. Christ-ians come much later, in Acts11.

As it notes two chapers previous, in Mt 5, he was talking to his disciples.

As for only one way, you may wanna look at the chapter you mentioned to see there are notably two ways compared in Mt 7:13,14: a broad way and a narrow way. You may also wanna note the narrow way of twain is not life, but only "leadeth unto life", by go on unto perfection.

For when spiritual of natural/spiritual there is still comparing spiritual with spiritual to attend to. And once new of old/new, well, there's still a new & dead way vs a new & living way to sort out. And when man of child/man, there is still two sorts of man kind to sort out.

As it's preposterous order to teach first and learn after, I suggest "ye go learn what meaneth I will have mercy and not sacrifice" mentioned in Mt 9:13.

And do note in Hebrews the "not" part of such will of God in heaven (also notably mentioned in Mt 7:21-23) is not then, not now, not ever. For God never desired sacrifice for sin (which is of the law and by the law), nor ever took pleasure in watching such law law take place.

And do also note that receiving the promise (eternal life) comes after doing the will of God.

Not to mention the "you all" in "the end" begins with "you".

The "grace" of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Jesus is not talking to Christians in Matthew 7:21-23; He's speaking to pseudo-Christians who use His name, but don't follow Him, nor have they ever been Born Again.

Remember, there weren't different sects of Christians at that time. There was just one denomination. Sects began forming as soon as he died - even while the disciples were still alive. Paul went one way and Peter went the other and people followed. I don't think there is a correct denomination anymore. They've all been seriously corrupted.

Jesus was not talking to Christians for most of the time. He said he was sent only to the House of Israel, and so most of what he said was directed to the Jews.

However, if you'd care to e-mail with some of the things you're thinking about, I'll do my best to answer.

The key is the verse before. In context:

Matt 7:20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.

We must bear fruit in the kingdom. We can only do that by being being filled with the Holy Spirit from God. [a continuous process]

The one way is the example that Jesus set. It is not a question of what you believe...it is a question of what is Truth. Jesus taught Truth and he did not say you have to become a Christian.

It's not a big deal. We're all individuals. Jesus never instructed us to become like robots. We have free will. All that matters is we trust Him.
