Agreed, it is a strange belief. If you estimate that there have been 30+ billion who have lived on the earth, 144K is only about 0.0005% of God's children. If that's the best plan God could come up with...to bring a tiny fraction of 1% of his children back to live with him in heaven...then maybe the plan needs to be reworked.
Actually I had a JW tell me that she didn't want to go to heaven. She wanted to stay here on the Earth because it would "be more fun". Talk about a strange relationship with God...

The 144,000 are not places in heaven. They are the number of witnesses that God will have on earth during the great tribulation to witness about Him and convert people to God. There will be 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. As far as people in heaven, the Bible states that just the people being saved during the great tribulation will number more than you can count.

My wife is a former practitioner of that religion which holds such a belief. The question I have is, if there are only 144,000 places why are they always out there knocking on doors trying to get everyone to convert to the "only true way"? I'm sorry but if I knew there were only x number of places I'd sure the heck wouldn't be out there trying to reduce my odds!

Just where did you get your information? Sounds like an exclusive society to me.
"In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you."
Ah! Jehovah's Witnesses. Their artist could only show that many happy people in his picture. I don't think it means anything, really. I guess there is a place for them, all the same.

The 144,000 are those that have lived pure, holy lives all of there lives. The number that are going to go to heaven is uncounted in scripture, so we really do not know the exact number.

NO, that is 144,000 places for the Jews which are God's chosen people. All who accept Jesus as their savior go to heaven. Read the entire bible and not bits and pieces.

No one goes into heaven until judegment day. What happens until dying and judgement day is that one's soul remains in the grave and depending on how you lived your life you may be in peace or in pain. I think 144,000 limit is something that Jehovah's witnesses teach from my understanding of this website http://experts.about.com/q/Jehovah-s-Witness-1617/144-000-2.htm

revalation 14 shows where the witnesses got the number from. the rest of Jehovah's faithful worshippers are given the gift of everlasting life on the earth (psalms 37:10,11). and there is no firey torment waiting for sinners, just everlasting unconsciousness.(ecclesiastes 9;5)
