Every airline has a flight programme. It's best to go through the airline to earn them and not a credit card. It's so easy to get into debt (take it from me) because they keep sending offers saying that you'll earn one air mile for every dollar spent. They encourage spending on the card so you get miles. But the amount of money you end up paying in finance charges is far more than you'd save buying the most expensive airline ticket.

I like the Star Alliance flight programme because of how many different airlines around the world are a part of it.

Yes, in Canada you can get the Air Miles Reward Miles card which lets you earn Air Miles from a wide variety of merchants from Safeway, Shell Gas Stations, Future Shop, Boston Pizza, Dell Computers, and so on. Air Miles can be redeemed for the obvious, plane tickets, but can also be redeemed for movei tickets, gift items, electronics, hotel stays, etc. Check it out at airmiles.ca

In the UK you can shop at Tesco to earn clubcard points; you can buy your electricity from Scottish and Southern Electric and a whole host of other suppliers also provide Air Miles.

The Air Miles credit card is issued by Nat West and is pretty good. It's my card of choice.

If paying by cash you probably still accumulate air miles. Call the airline you travel on and ask for clarification.
