My husband and I are going to be spending a few nights in DC while he's home on vacation from Iraq. Since he's only home for a short time, we want to stay somewhere nice, but not extremely overpriced. My main concern is to be in a good part of town.....
Any suggestions?

We don't want to spend more than $300 per night.

We love the Capital Hill area, as it's so close to all the museums and other historical things and there is so much security there! We are going in just a few weeks, and are staying at a bed and breakfast for $170 a night, and it looks very nice-- http://www.bbonline.com/dc/maisonorleans/index.html
It's near the Eastern Market Metro and the actual Eastern Market, and within walking distance to the capital, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and more. The White House would have to be by Metro or taxi, if you want to go there. It's a nice residential area (my daughter used to live in the same neighborhood and I know it's nice!)
Haven't stayed there yet, but from the contact I've had with the owner I am looking forward to a wonderful time there!
We've stayed at lots of hotels in DC, and the prices are quite high.

I just stayed in Fairfax, VA and only spent $80/night in a very nice Courtyard hotel. We were only 5 minutes from the Vienna/Fairfax metro, and it took about 20/25 minutes to get to the Smithsonian station from there. It was a great location and great hotel. Let me know if you'd like more info on it or any other hotels in the area...I did a lot of research looking for a place to stay that was outside of DC but close to a Metro without much traffic concerns.

Well, check out the following websites to check prices and availability.
Downtown is nice, but expensive. Alexandria, Rosslyn or Arlington would be good, since they are close to DC but not nearly as expensive.
Old Town Alexandria, especially, is very charming and has a lot to do.
Good luck, and travel safe!

DC is fairly expensive. You might consider staying in Arlington, VA instead and take the metro into DC to sightsee.

Stay in Foggy Bottom because it's in a nice area close to Georgetown and easily accessible to everything by Metro.

You may want to check rates at some of the city's boutique hotels, which have lots of style and are (mostly) centrally located.
