English is probably now the true 'world language'. The reasons for this are quite complex, certainly more complex than 'because the US uses it'.
One obvious reason is the spread of the language through colonization and the growth of the British Empire; and, however unpalatable some US citizens may find it, this has to include the colonies which later formed the basis of the USA. For example, the region that English is the language of business throughout the Indian subcontinent is simply down to the fact that the British became the dominant power in the region and the indigineous people used the language for ease of trade etc.
There is also an element of colonial or intellectual arrogance. In many cases no effort was made to learn the existing ways of a new country, and the English ways were imposed upon them; a classic example of this was the suppression of the gaelic language and the wearing of tartan in Scotland.
Since World War II the American influence has become much more important, certainly in the Pacific region; the Japanese and Filipinos, for example, speak so-called 'American' english. There are also neo-colonial echoes in the way America is now influencing this world language; for example, there have been many American remakes of european and other films over the years (Breathless, The Ring etc) which are often inferior to the original but achieve greater global coverage - this is a direct echo of the English disdain of local cultures. This is no reflection of the American people as a whole, in the same way that the British Imperial attitiude was indicative of all English (and British) people; this simply shows the disdain with which those in authority treat both the people at home and abroad.

The history is not so important and neither is the fact that the US is the most powerful country. It's important to be able to use English because it is the language people use most often when talking to someone who doesn't speak their language. If a German speaks to a Mandarin Chinese speaker, they most likely use English. Or an Arab talking to a Korean. That isn't going to change anytime soon because too many people have already learned it. The tones of Chinese make it much more difficult to learn at a basic level, and no one is moving toward putting Chinese into their schools instead of English.
So open your book and study more! If you want to talk to anybody outside your own country, you'll need to speak English.

Being an ESL teacher, I constantly have to answer this question, and my definite answer would vary depending on where you live. The general answer is that it is important because so many people in the world already speaks it. It is the language of commerce and business and science. Most scientific domains have their research published primarily in English.
There's also the massive amount of American pop culture out there. So many people in non-English speaking countries idolize Hollywood actors, but have never heard their actual voice. And songs. Teenagers in non-English speaking countries listen to 50 Cent and other rappers without having a single clue what it is about.
And finally, learning a language, whether it is English of Tagalog, or Japanese, is a fabulous way to understand a nation, its culture. I believe more Arabs would understand the American culture if they spoke English, as I believe more Americans would understand Arabic culture if they spoke Arab.

Because it is THE MOST dominant language in the world! English is the official language of most of the countries in the world! That's why! In addition, if you can't speak someone else's language, which isn't English, and they can't speak your language, which ALSO isn't English, you guys have ABSOLUTELY NO choice to speak to each other in ANY language other than English!
