Feces normally have a medium to dark brown color due to the breakdown products of blood that have been processed in the liver and excreted via the bile to the alimentary tract. Only with this processing in the liver are they water soluble and able to enter the stool properly.

In liver problems such as hepatitis, or other liver dysfunction, the feces will turn to a gray/white clay color. In this situation, the breakdown products of the blood are not water soluble, and accumulate in the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice). If you ever notice your feces turning very light in color, it is time to see a doctor, as this may be more noticeable early on than the change in skin color.
