YES, PEOPLE ARE CURIOUS ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BIBLE(NEW & OLD TESTAMENT)! BUT WE SHOULD NOT QUESTION GOD'S JUDGEMENTS! AS WE GO ON EACH DAY LIVING OUR LIVES. GOD, IS SHOWING US AND LETTING US KNOW WITH EACH AND EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY, HOW OUR LIVES AND THIS WORLD IS NOW, AND ALSO HOW & WHERE IT IS HEADING! INSTEAD OF QUESTIONING GOD, WE SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THE WARNING SIGNS THAT HE IS GIVING US EACH DAY! THEIR ARE ALOT OF US THAT ARE PAYING ATTENTION, BUT THEIR ARE OTHERS THAT ARE SO WRAPPED UP IN THE PAST THAT THEY ARE NOT AWARE OR THEY DON'T WANT TO BE AWARE OF THE PRESENT AND WHAT THE CONSIQUENCES WILL MEAN TO OUR FUTURES HERE ON EARTH OR WITH OUR HOLY LORD ABOVE!! GOD HAS GIVEN ALL OF US THE KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS TO DETERMINE HOW WE WANT OUR LIVES TO BECOME! QUESTIONING HIM IS NOT A WISE DETERMINATION FOR US TO MAKE!
WE SHOULD ALL BE THANKFUL TO OUR HOLY LORD, AND NOT QUESTION OR CRITICIZE HIS JUDGEMENTS!!!
GOD BLESSES & WATCHES OVER US ALL!!!!!!!!
AMEN!!!!

If you look at the big picture this will make sense.
In the Old Testament we see a Holy God who can not tolerate sin leading a sinful people whose only grace was the ark of the covenant where their sins would be covered. There was no tolerance of sin because a Holy God cannot fellowship with a sinful man.
In the New Testament we now have a living ark in Jesus Christ provided by God himself. God has kept HIS Holiness and yet is now able to have fellowship with man because of what Jesus did.

You judged the two books in your question. You can't talk about the two books without studying the history, the place and the mind of human being and their development. If you are a teacher you may teach one subject for different-stage students, a child and an adult for example, do you think your speech will be the same? and do you think your speech will create the same image in your audiences' minds? I don't think so. So the old testament represents God's speech to humans as they understood it and had formed images about it in their minds while the new testament represents an advanced stage in man's mind after Jesus coming to earth and revealing many things. However, humans are sometimes confused by the way the mind of God has been expressed in both books. So, our minds need a broad scale of thinking as a tool to surfe in the two books without being drowned by their deepness.

People probably were disagreeing with the Bible at the time, and when asked why they said "God seems so mean, I just can't agree with that." So someone came along and invented the Jesus story and made God into a nice guy.

I guess you missed "the REST of the story".
This particular enemy that God told them to destroy were EXTREMELY wicked beyond belief!
Here's a brief history of what had previously taken place:
The children of Israel were in the wilderness traveling from Egypt to the Promised Land.
The old, the stragglers, and the pregnent, being a little slower, were towards the back of the group.
These people were attacking Israel from behind, killing off the old, and tearing out unborn babies from the pregnant women who couldn't keep up. This particular group had become a cancer to the human race, even to the point where even the very youngest children were inundated and taught their wicked ways.
God had pronounced judgement on them, and told their victims (the people of Israel) to carry out that very judgement.
Now that you know the whole story, you tell me what YOU would do to a cancer growing on YOUR body, or your child's body. Would YOU spare the cancer? Would you spare the "baby" cancer cells? Would you allow that cancer to grow if you had the means to stop it dead in it's tracks?

The stories from the old testament and the new testament are from different times. The political climate had changed and so did the message. By this time we need a new new testament but people don't dare messing with the bible theses days because of the issues it would stir up with fundamentalists.

Jesus is still the same God,in the old testament you will read he gave alot of ppl room for repentance, and since they did not he had the nation of israel,to execute judgement for him.but he did make it clear in the book of Exodus and leveticus that they were not any better and they were still sinners like the nations they would destroy but they would repent and they knew the true and Living God

interesting point. personal opinion is that in the Old Testament there was a certain reason why GOD wanted the enemies destroyed which was so HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE would continue and prosper while the other civilizations would be forgotten as they did not follow GOD'S law. then in the New Testament there was a change of attitude because GOD sent JESUS to die so all of mankind had a chance to atone for their sins allowing them to have a way to return to GOD. trying to help as this is my opinion only and there may be better explanations available but i tried.

First of all, the 'old testament' as the asker calls it; was not before Jesus. Jesus was there thru out; He was in the beginning (John 1).
Second, the Bible says one is not to add to it,or take away from it. (That does not mean it is impossible to add to it or take away from it; it means it is wrong to do so. (Analogy; it is unlawful to murder people in this country presently. That does not mean it is impossible to murder people presently in this country, just that itis wrong, i.e people do get murdered in this country presenty). I believe the 'being' that gave the 'order' to 'go out and conquer' was the Lord Jesus Christ, but an addition to his word has been permitted in this country. The peoplewere told to keep themselves pure; that was part of it.
If this concept seems contrary to the asker; see Eccl.3.

God never said go out and kill all your enemies. If a certain group, such as the Philistens attacked Israel, then God said go wipe them out. It was under Gods orders and God gave the victory. I'm glad it has changes, because Justice isn't so Swift now. God loves us, but He wants obedience. Thank God for Jesus , who took our sins and was nailed to the cross to pay for them.

He said to kill them all, and then said not to marry the women... what women? Weren't they supposed to be killed? Do you suppose this was another instance when Abraham argued with God as he did at Sodom and Gomorrah?
I think the things God said throughout the Bible were His way of encouraging His people to be strong and to think positively. "Think" being the key word here. Archealogists have found no signs of massive destruction. I like to believe that the chosen people used their heads to find a peaceful way to assimilate with the Canaanites rather than destroy them.
