We are not under the Old Testament "Law", i.e., Torah. We are under Grace. That does not free us from the principles of the O.T.; in fact, according to the N.T., we are called to follow higher standards.
As the N.T. teaches "whatsoever things were written aforetime [the Tanakh] was written for our learning.
A person does not need the O.T. in order to be saved and to live the Christian life; however the O.T. does teach so much more, provides the background to the N.T., and so enriches our lives ... as long as we recognize the two Covenants and remember we are under the latter.
Even the N.T. confirms that God created man and woman; therefore it does not endorse teaching evolution.
Much of the O.T. does directly apply to all people. The N.T. helps to explain it and show us how to follow the precepts.
The New Testament is in the Old Testament contained.
The Old Testament is in the New Testament explained.

We are not under the Old Testament that is true. But if you don't take what it says about God and His promises towards His people, then how do you expect to come to have a "Relationship" with Him? The O. T. was/is written for our instruction to see the richness and depth of God. If you leave it out you fail to see the promises that He offered and HIS divine plan. Take the book Hebrews for example. If you didn't have the O. T. then that book would not mean very much to you at all. Study on!

The old testament provides much spiritual understanding, from the creation story, the origin of sin and evil in the world, and the history of a nation (Israel) that was unable to be the type of example to the rest of the world that God wanted.
The old testament is full of the predictions of Jesus, the coming Messiah, and without it we just wouldn't know as much about God as we do.
Christianity you see is all about relatiionships, our relationship with God and with other humans. We can only have a real relationship with someone whom we know and understand

If god made man, or evolution ran it's course is a matter of personal opinion, and should remain thus...
Personally, I think religious people should stop trying to force their religion on everyone else, and likewise, us non-religious people should not hold it against them for being religious.
I think yahoo made a big mistake in making a religion topic section anyhow, religious discussions seem to only end with 2 people disagreeing to the point of no return.

There is scripture that predated the Old Testament.
We are living without it. They are called the Book of Jashar and the Wars of Jehovah. Jim, you could start a whole new bull session on these scriptures. Just do a little research OK?

What is 'old testament' is a test for Christians. Is it 'Genesis-Malachi' or the Mosaic law?
(If one says it is 'Genesis-Malachi', I believe the person has missed the point(or application) of 2 Tim. 3:16-17.
Try applying Matt. 18:16, 2 Cor. 13:1.

Whether or not there was prophesy proof in the Old Testament it would still be ok to teach evolution. Prophesy isn't proof.. it is subjective.

Although under the second covenant Jesus instructs us through the New Testament, the Old Testament is filled with life experiences that God put there to instruct us in how we should follow him, and acknowledge his laws. You must study the entire bible in order to render your heart pure, fill your brain with all of the laws that pertain to dedicating your life to serving Him rather than Satan. There is plenty of wisdom in the Old Testament with Solomon and Proverbs, there are reasonings in Leviticus and Deuteronomy which help you fight Satan and identify false churches and false prophets. So that the Bible is a storehouse of knowledge and not one that you a la carte. The entire Bible has a genuine purpose for NOW.
In order to serve you must have a full knowlege, love him with your entire soul, and have deep faith and conviction in putting His laws in action in your life. Works without faith and faith without works gets you nowhere.
Living by faith, obediently following His laws, making changes in your life so that you are serving Him without the blemishes He abhors, spreading the Good News about Him and taking in knowledge.

We do not live under the Old Testaments laws any longer. That doesn't mean we can disregard what it says.
We have to read the Old Testament to understand the New Testament and vise versa.
