I have the 'Who do you think you are' family tree programme, but i don't like the way that the all in one tree overlaps the pages. Can anyone suggest a really good one?

I already have a subscription to genes reunited and have had numerous free trials with ancestry.co.uk. What i'm looking for is a programme you can buy. Any suggestions please?

If you do not want to buy a programme (I'm in the U.S., and we spell it 'program' on this side of the pond!), you can go to ancestry.com and build an on-line tree which will store all of your info, or to other sites of like status which have that capability. Genealogy.com has a link, also, to build and store your tree online.
The only problem I had with online trees was the detail information that I wanted to keep, but was not able to online. An example would be the cemetery name where the person was buried, reference information from biographies in books, other stuff of that nature. I bought Family Tree Maker about 8 years ago (I have been doing genealogy research for 20 years now, the first 12 were out of manila folders), and have upgraded twice. I am completely satisfied with the program(me); it does exactly what I want it to do. It's been well worth the monetary investment.

Hey b17_fortress,
I only know two or three programs. The one that most serious genealogists use is the Family Tree Maker. But, there are other packages that use the GENEALOGY STANDARD of a GEDCOM file (file extension .ged).
This allows you to communicate your pedigree/family tree with others, and merge others with yours. That collaborative effort allows you to grow your tree to include generations you never immagined. Here are a few packages: I will try not to mention any that my friends mentioned above. - I just noticed, Ted mentioned Family Tree Maker. I have no experience with the other he mentioned.
The LDS Software package is free! It does GEDCOM or .GED files, so you could get your feet wet for free - then try some other later. The good thing is that if the software will export a .GED standard file, you will be able to switch to a more robust package later.
I recommend you give TED PAC the 10 points - I just read his description of Roots magic, and went to their website. I like the feature he mentions about multiple edits with one change. That is annoying in FTM that you cannot do that. You might try to see how much Roots gives you for free information research. FTM sends you to the pay sites mostly.

I have been using "Family Tree Maker" for the last six years and have taken advantage of all their upgrades. If there is something you would like to see changed or added to the program you are invited to let them know so that they may incorporate it in their next upgrade (if enough people request it). I am very happy with their program and the different reports that can be generated from it. I also like the book making feature and the scrapbook for all my pics on each individual.

I have tried several soft-wares about 10-years ago but my favorite was Family Tree Maker. It has been updated several times and it has generating documents that I find handy. I would not say it addresses all my needs but most of them. I believe if you pick up a subscription with ancestry.com you get the software free, or at least that is what they did several years ago.

I like Roots Magic because I am a data base designer by trade, and I admire their data base design. To pick one example, you can change all 423 citations of a given place from "Puddlestone, Hants, England" to "Puddlestone, Hampsire, England" with one edit, in the list of places. In FTM, last I looked, you have to change all 423 one by one.
Write if you want a technical explanation of how they do that.
Family Tree Maker is the market leader in the USA. They have an agressive advertising campaign.
Both sell for around US $29 , both can be downloaded if you don't want to pay for shipping a CD across the atlantic. You may be able to find them at a software shop in the UK. Both have multiple features and many printing options.

Genes reunited and ansestry.com are the best,
I have both.
When you put your family in genesreunited it comes up with other people with the same names in their tree that way you can find members of your family all over the world like I have.
It costs about £10 a year and ancestry is about £50 a year but great value as you can search all kinds of records.

Genes Reunited for actually making your tree - It costs about £7 for a years membership.
Ancestry or FamilyRelatives or 1837online for searching through records - you have to pay for these services too.
Have yet to find any free sites.
Alternatively you can visit your local records office.
Hope this helps!
