liz you have to make a plan that is a long term plan not some silly fad diet that leads most of its followers to failure
a healthy lifestyle choice that is indeed maintained over a lifetime is vegetarianism it is healthy and it is cool
more important than diet is exercise
you have to find an exercise plan that you can continue doing for the long term
if you like walking then make sure you walk at a good pace for thirty minutes or more each day or at least four times per week
if you can get into running it is the best there are plans that help a person go from the couch to running continuously for thirty minutes and more
anyone can do it you would be surprised
there are many other simple things to do
drink water and tea instead of soda pop do not even drink diet soda pop
consider vegetarianism
and most of all
exercise
even if it is just walking

Joining weight watchers is a good idea because you get support through the meetings and stuff. I did it on my own. You have to create a diet plan that you'll want to stick with. Everything in moderation. You can have those chips, but measure out one portion, which is usually an ounce, just don't sit down in front of the tv with a whole bag of chips. Cut back on your portion sizes and limit yourself to one soda, or half of one, a day. You really have to think long term and look at this as a lifestyle change, not a diet. You want to create habits that you'll stick with for the rest of your life. What's the point in losing the weight now, if you'll just gain it back again down the road? That's what happens to a lot of people who try to cut out certain items (like carbs). Find exercises that are fun. I've been trying out new exercise dvds lately and this weekend I rollerbladed for the first time and it was fun. I have the Biggest Loser dvd and it's fun. I got it of Ebay, but you can also go to their website which is through nbc.com.

You should not think of it as a weight loss plan, but as a lifestyle change. Diets are meant to be broken because once you lose the weight, you go back to the eating lifestyle that you once had, and you start gaining weight again. You should start slowly, substituting foods that are fattening for non-fat alternatives. Instead of pizza for lunch, try a salad. Change to a non-sugar soda or water versus the sugary stuff. You'll slowly lose weight and will be able to keep it off permanently.

I got serious about weight loss a few years ago and went from 256 to 185 in about 6 months. Here's how I did it:
I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in between. However, I removed dairy and other fats from my diet. I ate quite a few hard and soft pretzels, rice cakes and baked potatos without butter or sour cream. So I was never hungry, but the amount of calories I was taking in was minimal. For meals, it's always sensible. I eat a lot of chicken, turkey and fish - low fat items.
Remember - it's not carbs that make you fat. It's fat that makes you fat.
Oh, and perhaps most importantly - Excersize! 20 minutes a day 4 days a week is about all it takes.
Good luck. I know it's not easy.

You sound a lot like me!!!! I have been about 20 lbs overweight for the past 8 years but was relatively happy with myself in a size 12. Then I got pregnant. I gained 80 lbs during the pregnancy (WAAAAAY too much!) and as of July still weighed 200 lbs and was a size 16w/18 Plus size. Prior to pregnancy I was about 175ish, give or take a few pounds. I'd tried walking, cutting back on sweets, switching to diet soda, etc, but just couldn't seem to get my metabolism to kick back into high gear. In early July I discovered the Cambridge Diet, which has been around for 30 years, and after several days of extensive research (including have my doctor check out the details of the diet) I decided to give it a try with my doctor following me to ensure I maintained my health. At the time I had high blood pressure and was on medication, high cholestorol and was about to be placed on medication, and hypoglycemia which ruled out many diets for me. I started the diet on July 5th and have never looked back. Today I am 169 lbs, a size 10 and am still losing weight. I'm off all medications and my doctor is so thrilled she's starting to recommend this diet to all of her overweight patients. There are many reasons why I chose this diet. #1 it is FDA approved and has a long and extensive history of success. #2 it's inexpensive, even for my one-income family ! #3 it's extremely easy to use and tastes great with a lot of options on flavors #4 it has a strong support system that utilizes the internet in a very effective way and #5 It comes with money back guarantee. I like this diet so much that I am not planning on ever stopping the supplements, even after I reach my ideal weight. I plan to continue drinking my shakes (or eating my soups or baking with my oats) indefinetly because of the nutrition I receive and the fact that I feel so much better. (In addition to eating regular meals of course!) They have multiple variations of the diet available to fit each individual's situation and lifestyle and best of all, the distributor you go through becomes your "personal cheerleader". They are available at your fingertips to answer questions, provide guidance, and to tell you "it's okay" if you fall off the wagon. Their encouragement is all part of the success plan and it's part of the job of being a distributor along with trying to reinforce behavior modification to help you keep the weight off. No extra or hidden fees for the support, it's just part of the Cambridge experience. You cannot purchase this product in stores and most distributors sell through a website "store". There are many different sites available to go through, however, they all sell exactly the same products for exactly the same price. The website below is a good distributor to go through and they have a lot of really good information about the diet on their website. Oh yah, if you choose to use this diet be sure you purchase the Food For Life product. There's Food For Life and "Original 330". The Food For Life is the newer version. It tastes better and is based on the US guidelines whereas the Original 330 is based on the UK dietary guidelines and does not have the variety of flavors and from what I hear, most prefer the flavor of the Food For Life. If you're not a "Weight Watchers" or "Jenny Craig" meeting type of girl this sounds like a great plan for you! Good luck to ya and you're already taking the first step towards a successful weightloss plan!

Diets do not work. 99% of people gain the weight back. Here is how it works. No one teaches the animal what to eat and what not to eat. He knows instinctively what to eat. Humans also have the same instinct. The way it works is just eat whatever tastes good and that will be healthy for you and non-fattening. That is why a baby tastes everything. So again whatever tastes good, is good for you. This is why you will spit out spoiled milk.
But wait!!! Man has the technology to create rat poison. It tastes like healthy food (good taste) but kills the rat. So man has done that to you. Note- any food unaltered by man (uncooked) that tastes good, is good for you. So if you are stranded in the woods, that is how you know what to eat (cooking changes that). So man has created fake fruit. It tastes like fruit that exists in nature but it is terrrible for health, addictive and fattening called sweets.
So it is natural to like real sweets called fruit, like a baby does, but they have fooled you just like the rat. But they do not want to kill you. They want you to become obese so you will buy lots of their foods. This is called GOOD BUSINESS. Remember the above (not on site) and see site below to re-learn how to eat so you can be thin and fit for life.

Why not try joining a group like Weight Watchers, where they have regular meetings and you can get advice and moral support from people who are going through the exact same thing you are?

Healthy weight loss tips
* Take one pound at a time
Don’t get overwhelmed by how much weight you need to lose. Try to remember that "losing 15 pounds in two weeks" is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat.
Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight.
Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 3-4 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories.
* Set Reachable Goals
For instance, if you know you need to get more exercise, begin with a manageable goal of, say, walking 10 minutes a day that you know you can achieve. Then build your self-esteem by achieving the small goals you set yourself.
The same logic applies for losing weight.
* Stay off the scales
Don’t get discouraged when your progress seems to be slow according to your bathroom scales. They do not provide a true measure of what is going on with the body.
If exercise levels are adequate (5-7 days a week), you may be putting on muscle but losing fat, thus losing inches even if you are not losing pounds. It's always a good idea to do several body measurements to have a second objective way to monitor progress.
* Stay focused on being healthy, not thin
# Many people become more successful at long term weight loss when their motive changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body's weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.
* Fat Free?
We've known for some time that limiting high fat foods in the diet can be helpful with weight loss. That's because fats pack in 9 calories per gram compared to only 4 calories per gram from proteins or carbohydrates. To many, the message to limit fats implied an endorsement to eat unlimited amounts of fat-free products. Just to clarify, fat-free foods have calories too. In some cases fat-free foods have as many calories as their fat laden counterparts. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you will gain weight. Eating less fat will help you to lose weight. Eating less fat and replacing it with excessive amounts of fat-free products will not.
* Drink plenty of water
Drink eight glasses a day. Water is a natural appetite-suppressant. Nettle tea is a great weight-loss tea as it supports metabolism and has diuretic properties.
* Reward yourself
# Each time you reach a goal, such as losing 5 pounds, reward yourself with a gift or a massage.
* Seek help if you need it
# A big key in long term weight control comes from receiving encouragement and support from others. Find a friend to lose weight with or you can check to see if groups such as Weight Watchers, or eDiets offer programs and resources in your area by clicking the links. You may also wish to check with your local hospital to see if their registered dietician conducts group weight loss programs.
* Watch your portions
With the advent of "supersize" meals and increasingly huge portions at restaurants, our concept of normal serving sizes is a distant memory. Be mindful of the amounts of food you consume at a sitting. When necessary, divide your food in half and ask for a take home bag. It is all too easy to be a "plate cleaner" even when served enormous portions. Learn to pay attention to your hunger level and stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.
* Eat your food slowly
Did you ever notice that thin people take an awfully long time to eat their food? Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. That's because from the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness before the 20 minute signal has had a chance to set in. The amount of calories consumed before you begin to feel full can vary significantly depending on how quickly you eat. So slow down, take smaller bites and enjoy your food.
