He doesn't even seem to notice he has done it. Is this a bad sign? Is he dying?

He may have a fairly common back problem called spondylosis. Older dogs sometimes develop this as the cartilage in their spines wear out. The result is stiffness, pain and sometimes a gradual loss of control of bodily functions. I've known dogs who had it that would lose some stool or even some urine while resting.

Spondylosis is diagnosed with an x-ray. There is no real cure for it. Obtaining an official diagnosis may not be necessary...you can treat it with glucosamine and aspirin, which will benefit any older dog regardless of whether this is his specific problem. Check with your vet to find out the correct dosage for his size.

Too, your dog might benefit from being put on a dog food with glucosamine in it - glucosamine helps slow down the deterioration of cartilage. Also you can buy glucosamine sulfate by itself and give it to your dog every day. Older dogs often do well on glucosamine even if they don't have spondylosis because their joints may deteriorate less slowly overall, while taking it.

Like elderly people this happen's. I have an eleven year old Rottie that wears diapers now when she's in the house. You still need to let the vet see him, it could easily be an infection that can be corrected with no problem. Try to eliminate all possible problem's before you get too worried. Let the vet help you, that's what they're there for. And if it turn's out just to be old age, don't worry, he can be around for a long time to come. My Rottie has been wearing diaper's for a year and a half. Do get some professional help and go from there. Good luck to you and your Pooch.

He is 10. Chances are it's just getting old. Body parts don't work as well as they did at 2 yrs. It's like as you get older things seem to return to what it was like as a baby (or puppy). Think about it ;)
