I'd suggest watching American soap operas if you can get a hold of them. I know it sounds odd, but I often hear foreign actors telling interviewers that they learned English from soap operas. I think it might be because the actors always emote so heavily that it makes it easier to understand the context of what they are saying. In addition, the plot doesn't move very fast on many soaps (Passions, in particular), and the actors say similar things over and over again.

I don't think learning 1000 words is necessarily a great goal; you should focus on conversational phrases for now, and let more extensive vocabulary come to you as you have the need to describe specific concepts. But if you're really attached to the idea, then just pick up an English language dictionary and memorize any 1000 words that grab your fancy.

Good luck when you come to the US!

This depends on your retention rate as well. What you can do is to post a list of common English words on your mirror. So that when you brush your teeth or do your shaving, you will be able to see them. And also, carry along with you and English - Persian Dictionary. Read it whenever you have time. When you are waiting for your food at a restaurant, in the toilet, in a bus, wherever. The key is in learning simple words first. I can see that you have a good command of the language already, or else you would not be able to craft your question that way. Read a lot of English books, magazines, newspapers too. Reading helps a lot in expanding our vocabulary. Hope this helps. :)
