Well if you want to do Chili, you can do either Hot dogs or Hamburgers. You can go to Sam's club and get a whole bunch of hot dogs for close to nothing, and Big thing of Hamburger meat as well. If the party is Sponge bob, then I would go with burgers. Crabby Patty's, they are cheap and they fit perfect into the theme. Also easy to cook, and not to messy. All around win situation.

i think chili is a good idea. Like you said it will be cold. My sons B-Day is in may and all i do is make a cake have some chips, dip, pickles, and finger sand. October is my favorite month you could also do some kind of Halloween theme to ad to it like make something come out of the chili like a finger or something. Just an idea.

I'd go hot dogs and hamburgers...that's pretty cheap.
You can also do a couple of dips that go over perfectly:

1) Salsa dip with totilla chips:
Mix together 250g(8 oz pkg) cream cheese, a 250ml sour cream and 1 /2 cup mayonaise. Spread this mixture in a glass pan..like 9x13 or whatnot, then put a layer of mild salsa and sprinkle the top with grated cheese. Serve with tortilla chips...it's so delicious and everybody LOVES it. You wont have any of this baby left over.
2) Chocolate chip cheese ball: (sounds...err...different, but SOOO delicious.)
250g(8oz pkg) cream cheese
1/2 cup butter
1/4 tsp vanilla
2 TBs. brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup MILK CHOCOLATE chips
Beat softened cream cheese, butter & vanilla until creamy. Slowly add sugars until belnded. Stir in chocolate chips. Place mixture on a piece of plastic wrap and form into a ball. Refrigerate for 1 hour. When ready to serve place on tray and drizzle with choclate sauce. Serve with honey or chocolate chip teddy grahams.. YUMMY. You may be skeptical, but I tell ya, it's worth a try.

I also suggest pizza..that always goes over well with kids.

Hope I've helped, and please do try these recipes. You'll be making them for years and years...it'll be the hit of the party.
Good luck!

Chicken nuggets, small burgers (crabby patties), hotdogs, coctail sandwiches, grill cheeses<----can be cooked in abundence in the oven on a cookie sheet (8 at a time), soups, beef stew! Do a variety now that your son is older and may have friends coming! shrimp is another option since it's spongebob theme, but that can be expensive!

Have everyone bring a dish. You can cook chili if you want to. It is your party. We always get everyone to bring 1 item. 50 people are a lot of mouths to feed a lot of bucks there.

Crabby Patties! You could also get mini pizzas and perhaps get them in star-shapes so they look like Patrick!

Other inexpensive ideas... hot dogs, wings, sausage rolls (pigs in blankets), salsa & chips, tuna salad and crackers, mini cheese paste sandwiches.
