I would think it would depend on the age and maturity level of the child who would be doing the babysitting. Is this child responsible around the house? How do they react under stress or an emergency? Does the older child show patience with the younger sibling under normal circumstances? In my opinion, before any child starts babysitting, they should take babysitting classes, along with CPR classes. In my area, our local library offers the babysitting classes.

After the teenager, (I would think around 15 or 16), has sitter classes, this age would be appropriate.
Putting a younger child in charge of a sibling 4 yrs younger, is not a wise idea.

You have to take into account that the older sibling would know what to do in case of emergency, could handle and discipline the sibling if needed, and it would be a good idea if the sibling knew CPR, which should be taught in the sitter class.

I would wait until the oldest was at least 12 but probably 13 and base it on how responsible and mature the older child was. Also how well the younger child behaves for the older child.

At least age 12.

I wouldn't leave children under 12 at home alone for any length of time at all. They do not have the maturity to deal with any problems that might arise even though you're only a cell away.

you should check your state law. In South Dakota it is the age of 12. Because if anyone see that the babysitter is underage you can get in a lot ot trouble.
