Last night I highlighted my friends hair using a home kit and foils. I sectioned off the strip of hair along the top of the head to just below the crown and tied all the rest up. I used a tail comb to section off thin sections and weaved through these as they do in the hairdressers to get a more natural look. It looks gorgeous, she has dark hair with blonde right the way through evenly now EXCEPT at the crown, it looks really stripey. She did my hair using the same technique, all is fine except for this stripey crown. What do you do to prevent this? Is there a special technigue for the crown area? Please don't say go to a proper hairdresser etc as this is not an option. Thank you.

The reason it looks stripey is because (well two reasons) first off, you can always see the highlights at the crown from root to end (as opposed to the ones underneath which are visually broken up by other hair and also, you can't see where these meet the scalp)...this automatically makes them stripey-er. Also, you may have woven them too thick. To make the hair on the crown not look as stripey you initially should have put the foils in on a diagonal instead of straight down the part (change directions when you get to the corner of the head and then go on that diagonal...sorta like a zig-zag) Also, take smaller pieces than in the rest of the head.
To fix it (this is the part I hesitate to help with because I want to tell you to go to a hairdresser..but here we go) you should pick a color close to her natural color but with a little warmth to it..so if she is a medium brown, then choose a medium gold brown or a medium auburn brown. Then go back in on the crown and refoil with the dark color. When you are sectioning off the highlights, split them in half and color over them with the dark color. This way you will still have some highlight but not as stripy. WARNING: If you don't choose a warm color to do the lowlight with you may end up with a funky green-ish or olive color over the highlights. (This is especially true if the highlights are very light) Do not make the mistake of thinking..."well, I don't want any warmth in my hair, so I will pick neutral or cool tones"...for that you really will be sorry.
Next time think skinny weave at the scalp.

Good luck.

Your going to close to the roots on the crown area and it sounds like its seeping out. Best bet is to buy a darker dye - similar to natural hair colour - and weave small sections out of the stripey area. If its that bad then dye the whole section of stripes back dark and if the hairs in good enough condition try weaving smaller sections of hair and start again - just dont use too much and dont go to close to the roots!!
I am a hairdresser and without seeing it its hard to advise, to be honest with you you are best going to the hairdressers as they will be able to correct it for you

I read somewhere that it has to do with the foil treatment.
I am not a hairdresser, but have used highlights many times.
You could by a highlighter kit that has the frosting cap in it and try adding a few strands to see if it helps. Just mix up a little of the powder and solution like you would do for a allergy test.

it is because you put too much cream in each foil and the foils have slipped down and the colour hed leaked on to the other sections of hair. just add in some lo lights of her natural colour hair where is has gone stripey and that should do the trick. good luck

It is because you are letting the foils slip down thus creating a line of hair dye, you have to be really careful and not put the dye right to the top of the foil in that area.
