The original quote is from the Bible book of Proverbs:

"Pride goeth before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall." Prov 16:18

It means that if you're proud or vain, you think you know it all. But, the world isn't that simple. There will always be something new, some unexpected event. If you're too vain to believe it will happen, and too vain to prepare or be alert for it...then you'll fall.

You're business will fail, you'll look stupid, you'll fail a test, you'll lose your love...whatever.

Humans are finite. They don't control the world, they operate in it. But, the temptation is that we are smart enough to know it all.

Actually vanity always has a fall.

Please think what we are? Where have we come from? What is our purpose on this earth? What power do we have before the natural forces?

So what have down that we are so vain?

There is so much to discover in this world. We are just a minuscule compared to it.

One does feel very high handed when one achieves some fame, power and money. But to what effect.

Even Hitler had a fall. In fact he committed suicide.

What ever has grown up, must come down one day.
