Laptops will typically crash when playing the Sims 2 because the game is too intense for their processors and cooling system. I know dozens of people that try to play sims 2 on their laptops. It is touch and go.

Laptops will tend to run super hot because they cannot support the cooling systems that desktops can have. It is because of this that laptops are not very good game machines. They were made for doing office procedures and are often not optimized for games. They can play movies and do things that require minimal processing.

Test your laptop on this test to see if you get red marks:
In the black box, pick The Sims 2 - or the version in question

Reduce all the extra processing going on (background programs) also consider putting your laptop on a "laptop cooler" (google it). Add on memory if you're low on memory.

You will have more satisfying gameplay with a desktop machine. I have both, and there is no comparison - the desktop is much more stable when playing the Sims 2.

Righ-click My computer>properties>advance>perfomance Settings>Advance>
Then click change on virtual memory and on that screen increase the quantity of Virtual memory.
