I want a relaxing holiday (next May) where I can just lay on the beach or by a pool and read loads of chick-lit.

I would plump for lanzarote - it will be hot but there is usually a nice cooling breeze and the sea will be a bit warmer than the Algarve at that time of year.

I like the Algarve, but it can still be quite cold in May. You will rpobably be okay lying on the beach, but too cold to actually swim. Portuguese food is great too. Eat where the locals eat (go inland in necessary). It's much cheaper and twice as nice.

I've been to both place's I enjoyed the Al grave the best, I hired a car and went sight seeing really enjoyed it ,its friendly and reasonable, May is a good time to go a little cooler and not so many tourist, your accomation will be cheaper and you will not be queueing

lanzarote will be sunnier in may but the algarve is beautiful

Never been to The Algarve.Lanzarote is a cheapo tourist place.
