Do you know if my AFrican Grey will be alright with just styptic powder for his nail bleed. I clip hisnail yesterday and it bled and I applied flour and then the bleed stopped. When I put him in his cage he bled the same nail and I had to put him on his bird stand the whole night. Please let me know if I need to take him to the vet or its sufficient to use the styptic powder. Thanks

Just continue to add styptic powder, and as someone else said, apply constant pressure to the nail with a cloth or paper tower with the styptic powder (or flour) and it should stop. I once held a rabbit for 1 hour holding pressure on his little nail before he stopped bleeding. It takes time, but it works. If the nail does not stop bleeding after an hour or two, I WOULD definitely take him/her to the vets or else he/she could die of blood loss...

****Good Luck*****

you need to get the bleeding to stop...how bad is it bleeding...put styptic powder on it ASAP, it stings a bit sometimes...but if that doesnt stop it. Appl y pressure directly to the end ob the nail for 3-5 mins...NO PEEKING...if it does not stop after that take it to a vet. If the bleeding stops after poressure use the styptic to help seal it and let it dry befor eyou put him back in cage.

If the bleeding has stopped and your bird is alive and alert, you don't need to go to the vet. If your bird's nail bleeds just don't put him on a sanded or rough perch. That will start the bleeding again. Don't get too panicked. I've caused many bird nails to bleed and some of them have bled badly. So far, nothing has died.

not real sure about the bird nail but, on a dog you can use a bar of non deodorant soap just scrape the open nail over it .... the bleeding will stop immediately and the animal will leave it alone because of the taste..... worked every time !

He should be just fine. Baking Flour words every bit as well as stypic powder for bleeding. It happens. Makes you feel like crap, but it happens.
