3 Men pay £10 each (£30) for a room for the night in a pub, after a while the manager realises that the room they are sharing has no air con and so would only cost £25. He gives the £5 change to the barman and ask him to return it to the men, the barman thinks that if he keeps £2 and gives them back £1 each they won't know any difference, if they have £1 each returned that means they've now paid £9 each - 3 x 9 = £27 and the barman has £2 total £29 as we started with £30 where is the other £1 ?

They did pay £9 each, which gives £27
They original paid £10 each, which makes £30
£30 - £27 is the £3 they were given back.
£27-£25 is the £2 that the barman pinched.

the barman has nothg to do w/ this.
the manager had 30 pounds.
he returns the 5 pounds that makes 25 (with the manager)
the barman takes away 2 pounds and gives them the three pounds..
30 (given in begining) - 25 = 5
25 (manager got it) + 3 pounds for the men + 2 pounds with the barman = 30 pounds.
the thing is: the barman's 2 is not in the count. and it's wrong to count 9*3... bcz they didn't pay 9, they paid 10 & got a discount.
i had this done during my internship at the bank... i solved it this way, and still aced the test ;)

[£] = one pound
Man 1: [£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£] 10 pounds
Man 2: [£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£]10 pounds
Man 3: [£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£]10 pounds
They each pay that amount. Now the front desk has:
[£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£] <--.
[£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£] <-- 30 pounds
[£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£][£] <--'
The manager tells the barman to take 5 pounds back to the room, so the front desk now has:
[£][£][£][£][£] [£][£][£][£][£]
[£][£][£][£][£] [£][£][£][£][£]
[£][£][£][£][£] 25 pounds
And the barman has [£][£][£][£][£] 5 pounds.
The barman pockets 2 pounds ( [£][£] )
and gives the guys 1 pound each.
Man 1: [£]
Man 2: [£]
Man 3: [£]
Pocket: [£][£]
As you can see, each man has one pound and the boy has 2 in his pocket, there was no missing [£].
If you think it backwards then you can not think of it as 9 x £3 = £27 and THEN plus the 2 pounds in the barman's pocket, because the 2 pounds in the pocket is not relevant to the 9 pounds they paid. However the 2 pounds IS relevant to the 3 pounds missing, which equals 5, which adds to 25 which equals 30.
The question is purposely miswritten to throw people off.
This quest is on the perdue college entrance admission test, so good luck :P

if each men gets back £1, dat means they only paid a total of £27. Since thats the case, then the mgr had the £25, the barman had the £2, so there's nothing missing.

£30 was paid over , three has been returned which leaves £27
they have paid £9 each which is £27
of which £25 has gone to pay for the rooms and £2 has gone to the barman
you dont add 2 to the 27 to get 29, you take two off the 27 to get the 25 that paid for the rooms

If they shared a room at £25 per night, the cost was £8.33 per person.
£8.33 + £1 = £9.33 per person or £27.99 per night. (25+3=28).
Working in reverse:
£30 - £2 = £28, with each man receiving £9.33.
Your maths is the following:
3*10=30
30-3 = 27
27+2 = 29
The problem lies with the change of the sign.
-3+(+2) = -1
30 -1 = 29!
QED
Proof:
30-3=27
27-2=25

Lets see breakup of £30 we started with.
Manager keeps £25
Barman keeps £ 2
3 Men have £ 3 (returned to them)
Adds up to £25+£2+£3=£30
Nothing is lost.

the other pound is divided 33.3 pence between the 3 men because £25 divided by 3 is £8.33 each plus the one pound each they were returned =£9.33 each times by 3 is £27.99 plus the barmans £2 =£29.99 which means you should be looking for 1p

One of the men had a hole in his pocket. The £1 coin fell through the hole and out of his trouser leg. His dog swallowed it and became very ill, so he took him to the vet and the vet charged him £300. By then, he wasn't too worried about the £1.
