Maybe that is ther opinion on the matter or just how they feel about the subject....Or just maybe they are having trouble in there own life with stress and all at the moment.. and answer harshly.
Or they are just feel they are being honest.

Maybe they were already upset by reading the question, not by answering it. Not sure what you mean by "defensive" though so maybe I'm missing something.
