I've bought a steamer but the wallpaper seems to be superglued to the walls! Also, it's been painted over about 5 times with thick satin and I think some gloss underneath! What can I do to get it off?

The paper tiger a scoring tool will be of great help. You can make your own stripper out of downy and water 1-1 ratio, but your best bet is to use a product called DIF Wallpaper Stripper by Zinnser. It is a liquid that will help loosen dried glues. If you don't have a garden sprayer, get you one, at least a 1 gal size, two gallon would be better.
Score the paper, spray the liquid and then walk away for a few minutes. Give the product time to work. Then take a flat putty knife or spatula and start lifting the paper up. If you are still fighting it, spray again. This can be messy so put down towels or drop cloths to protect your flooring.
Professionally installed wallpaper frequently is tougher to remove than homeowner-hung paper. That's because pros, often leery of factory-installed pastes, use unpasted papers and apply adhesive liberally, or they add an activator to prepasted versions to improve adhesion. Either way, they have to work a little harder to remove paper put up by a fellow pro.
Vinyl-coated wallpapers - several layers of old paper, painted-over paper or a lightweight paper that can't be pulled off - are even trickier. Water or stripper can't penetrate these surfaces and attack the adhesive. The surface of the paper has to be scored - without carving up the wall - to expose the adhesive.
Your final thought might be to have this professionally removed. Make sure your contractor knows how to do drywall repair, but it is likely you will have need of this service as well.
Short of selling the home (I just had to laugh when I read that one) Of course you have been fighting the removal of the paper, perhaps selling the house as been a fleeting thought.

you need to perforate the paper and layers of paint first, use something to score the paper, you can buy things called a paper tiger from decorating shops or a roller with little spikes on it. otherwise you can use a knife to score it, but watch the fingers!!!.
once the steam gets to the paper underneath it will come off fine.

My dad is a painter and he always saturates the paper with hot water first and then uses a scraper. I must warn you that this is an incredibly tedious job and if it is a large room you would be better off just to buy a new house

You might have to do it a couple of times....score, soak, scrape...score, soak, paint.
Don't use any branded chemicals, the only thing you need is a decent rock CD

You can buy a liquid wall paper stripper.
Alternatively use a stanley knife to score the paper as much as possible, soak it, and leave it to absorb, then scrape it you have to get the moisure into the glue holding it on

I know this sounds more laborious but it is not - put up new drywall - cut the wall out and put new up. It takes less time then stripping wallpaper
