Scientists at Xerox Corporation.
"Xerox" is based on a Latin or Greek word for 'dry'. The machines use a dry process to produce a copy of a document.
Xerox Corporation had a famous laboratory in Palo Alto, California, Park Lab, where many of the prototypes for our computers were first developed. Xerox Corporation did not bring these products to market because they we getting rich making copy machines and felt that their new inventions would too severely dilute their existing money tree. The products "leaked" out of the Lab and were marketed by other companies. Xerox Corporation still makes copy machines for a declining market, and their name is now popularly used to describe a copy machine made by any company.
